Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving may have an ace up his sleeve with one defenseman whose trade value has skyrocketed thanks to a very strong season.<\/p>\n

But one player who could be a huge factor going forward is Oliver Ekman-Larsson as his vintage performance this season could end being a key asset for the Maple Leafs going forward.<\/p>\n

Though what exactly is his supposed trade value? Surely a player like Ekman-Larsson won’t give you that much back despite his performance right?<\/p>\n

According to two analysts they believe that his throwback performance could end up bringing back quite the return for Toronto.<\/p>\n

Chris Johnston and James Mirtle discussed the Maple Leafs trade candidates and tried to figure out their trade value when the topic of Ekman-Larsson came up with the two agreeing that OEL could be a a huge asset:<\/p>\n

Reasonable cap hit ($3.5M) with two years left, but age (turns 35) limits value. Selling high may be smart, as his value is unlikely to increase.<\/p>\n

Of course, no team is going to want to bring in a 35-year old, but Ekman-Larsson has been putting in a very strong season and looks like he’s ten years younger on the ice.<\/p>\n

Why contenders want Oliver Ekman-Larsson<\/p>\n

In 54 games he has 32 points (8 goals, 24 assists) while also anchoring the defense as best he can.<\/p>\n

He also has 45 blocks and 68 hits, and he’s brought a certain meanness to the lineup.<\/p>\n

He’s also a Cup winner and one of the best offensive defenseman of the last 15 years with his accomplishments speaking for himself.<\/p>\n

Ekman-Larsson also made Team Sweden for the Olympics so right now he’s as hot as ever.<\/p>\n

What could that heat bring though?<\/p>\n

Well reports have said anything from a couple of picks and a prospect to as high as first-round pick but that’s still a huge consolation especially if they are rebuilding.<\/p>\n

He doesn’t fit the timeline and should be moved for as much as possible.<\/p>\n

His departure will also make room for other defenders like William Villeneuve to step in see if they can earn themselves a secure spot in the lineup, so it’s not a complete loss; the Maple Leafs need to see what they have in terms of a pipeline.<\/p>\n
