TAMPA \u2014 A roller-coaster night for the Bruins rife with swings of momentum, a parade to the penalty box, and a goalie fight seemingly ended on a high note in overtime for David Pastrnak.<\/p>\n

Just 22 seconds into the extra frame of Sunday\u2019s Stadium Series showdown against the Lightning, Pastrnak capped off a 2-on-1 rush by rifling a puck past Andrei Vasilevskiy \u2014 securing another valuable two points in the standings against arguably the best team in the Eastern Conference.<\/p>\n

Pastrnak\u2019s revelry at Raymond James Stadium was short-lived.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Before he could even celebrate with his teammates, he was instead ushered to the penalty box for a slash \u2014 with the officials not only waving off his tally, but instead giving Tampa an extra skater for the next two minutes of overtime.<\/p>\n

It was the latest tough break in what was ultimately a frustrating night for the Bruins \u2014 ultimately ending by way of a 6-5 shootout loss against Tampa.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThat hurts. It hurts a lot,\u201d Charlie McAvoy said postgame. \u201cThe way that we lost it is just brutal, spending half the game in the penalty box.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was a long night in the sin bin for the Bruins, who let a 5-1 lead in the second period slip through their grasp due to a flurry of Tampa power-play tallies.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In total, the Lightning were awarded seven straight power-play opportunities to close out the game \u2014\u00a0with Tampa erasing that sizable deficit with three strikes on the man advantage in the second period, including a pair of 5-on-3 scores.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As Morgan Geekie stressed repeatedly, the Bruins were guilty of rather blatant penalties amid that second-half implosion.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But what the Bruins took umbrage of on Sunday was the lack of calls against Tampa during that sustained stretch of chaos \u2014 as well as the frantic sequence involving Pastrnak in overtime.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t get any calls,\u201d McAvoy said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that made us more mad than the calls,\u201d Geekie added of the play involving Pastrnak.<\/p>\n

Seconds before Pastrnak seemingly ended the game in overtime, the officials ruled that Pastrnak had slashed Tampa\u2019s J.J. Moser \u2014 with one ref raising his arm up. But as Pastrnak and the Bruins pushed the puck down the ice, no whistle was heard.<\/p>\n

As such, even Jeremy Swayman started to make his way to Boston\u2019s bench as the sequence played out \u2014 thinking that the penalty was against Tampa given that the Bruins had possession of the puck and play hadn\u2019t stopped.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Instead, it was a slash against Pastrnak \u2014 who only realized it after he had already fired a puck past Vasilevskiy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Pastrnak didn\u2019t mince words postgame about the call.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have no clue what happened,\u201d Pastrnak said postgame. \u201cIt\u2019s a freakin\u2019 turnover, we\u2019ve got a 2-on-1, the referee has his arm up, he\u2019s letting me go, Sway\u2019s going to the bench, we finished the play, score a goal and all of a sudden I\u2019m in the penalty box. It\u2019s a joke. I don\u2019t understand.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never seen something like that. To me it was a joke. I don\u2019t care if that\u2019s a bad answer, but that\u2019s how I feel. It\u2019s weird. Score a goal and end up in the penalty box. Whatever. We gave them two points and that\u2019s what matters. Tough on us.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Geekie and McAvoy, it was the optics of Pastrnak making it down the ice and Swayman leaving the net that further infuriated them.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust the fact that Sway was out of the net and we carried it all the way down the ice and we scored without anyone blowing the whistle,\u201d Geeke said. \u201cSo, he [the ref] obviously saw something that none of us did, but we might\u2019ve been watching two ice sheets.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m skating up the ice with the ref and his hands in the air, and I was like, \u2018on who?\u2019 Couldn\u2019t believe he called another penalty, and we go down with the puck,\u201d McAvoy added. \u201cSo I was like, \u2018Oh, it\u2019s on them. Sway made it halfway to the bench, and then he just blew it dead.\u201d<\/p>\n

McAvoy was asked if the officials gave them any explanation for the call.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, we didn\u2019t get anything,\u201d McAvoy said. \u201cHe came over and said, \u2018Sorry\u2019. I don\u2019t know how. I don\u2019t know \u2014 you\u2019ll have to ask him. I don\u2019t know. I don\u2019t know what he what he was thinking or seeing there.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

As frustrating as Sunday\u2019s game was, even Pastrnak harped on the Bruins own self-inflicted miscues that turned what was looking like a statement win into an ugly loss.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe game was over. It was in our hands. We had them,\u201d Pastrnak said. \u201cWe made the mistakes. We let them, let them back in the game with our mistakes, and [you] can\u2019t afford it against a team like Tampa. They are heck of a team. \u2026 We left the points, again, on the table.\u201d<\/p>\n
