Monday afternoon, the Carolina Hurricanes announced that rookie defenseman Charles-Alexis Legault was activated from the injured reserve and assigned to the Chicago Wolves (AHL).<\/p>\n

Legault, who has played eight games with the top club this season, proved to be a great addition to the lineup amidst a swath of injuries on the blueline.<\/p>\n

Originally given a timeline of three to four months for a full recovery, his return is just one week ahead of the three-month mark. Despite the injury, he has participated in skating drills to remain sharp on his feet throughout the recovery. On January 23rd, he was spotted at practice<\/a> sporting a yellow non-contact sweater.<\/p>\n

How Legault\u2019s Injury Occurred<\/p>\n

His injury occurred on November 9th as the team played the Toronto Maple Leafs in a game that honored those inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame the same week. In the waning seconds of the first period, Legault put a check on Nick Robertson, which put the Leafs forward on the ice. Bobby McMann did not appreciate the hit on his teammate and subsequently dropped the gloves with Legault.<\/p>\n

Amidst the flurry of flying fists<\/a>, Legault\u2019s right hand missed McMann and instead punched the skate of Robertson. Immediately, he recoiled and withdrew from the fight, wrapping his hand in a towel as head athletic trainer Doug Bennett escorted him down the visitor\u2019s tunnel. After the game, Rod Brind\u2019Amour announced that Legault had been transported to the hospital due to the injury.<\/p>\n

The following day, he underwent surgery to repair multiple torn extensor tendons.<\/p>\n
