{"id":450899,"date":"2026-02-08T02:52:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-08T02:52:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/450899\/"},"modified":"2026-02-08T02:52:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-08T02:52:11","slug":"kings-have-started-extension-talks-with-brandt-clarke-pro-hockey-rumors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/450899\/","title":{"rendered":"Kings Have Started Extension Talks With Brandt Clarke \u2013 Pro Hockey Rumors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back in 2021, the Kings drafted defenseman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/clarkbr02.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Brandt Clarke<\/a> eighth overall with the hopes that he could emerge as a key contributor on their back end.\u00a0 While there were some stops and starts early on in his career, he has now emerged as a legitimate top-four player.<\/p>\n<p>Set to reach restricted free agency this summer for the first time, it appears that the team is hoping to get something done before it comes to that point.\u00a0 Speaking to reporters following the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/panarar01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-02-07_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Artemi Panarin<\/a> trade (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/kings\/video\/ken-holland-on-artemi-panarin-trade-6388870806112\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">video link<\/a>), GM Ken Holland indicated that there have been plenty of discussions about a new deal for the 22-year-old with a goal of getting something in place before July 1st.<\/p>\n<p>While having an agreement in place before free agency opens up removes the possibility of an offer sheet, it would also give Holland more certainty of what he does or doesn\u2019t have to spend on the UFA side of things.\u00a0 Given that there\u2019s a wide range of outcomes, having that extra knowledge would be useful.<\/p>\n<p>For example, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.afpanalytics.com\/nhl-contract-projections\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">AFP Analytics has<\/a> a pair of projections for him.\u00a0 A two-year bridge deal could check in around $5MM per season while a seven-year pact approaches the $8MM mark.\u00a0 Considering eight-year deals are still allowed until mid-September, a potential price tag could even go higher.\u00a0 That variance is more than enough to cover a UFA signing or two so knowing where Clarke\u2019s next deal will check in ahead of free agency would certainly affect the rest of their planning.<\/p>\n<p>Last season, Clarke\u2019s first full NHL campaign was a successful one.\u00a0 He picked up five goals and 28 assists in 78 games with largely sheltered minutes as he logged a little over 16 minutes per game with plenty of offensive zone starts.\u00a0 Clarke then added a pair of goals in their opening-round loss to Edmonton with an even lower workload in terms of playing time.<\/p>\n<p>This season, Clarke has emerged as a consistent second-pairing player.\u00a0 While his zone starts are still skewed toward the offensive end, his ice time is up past 19 minutes per game, putting him third among Los Angeles defenders.\u00a0 He has already passed last year\u2019s goal total as he\u2019s up to six and with 21 helpers, he\u2019s on pace to surpass that as well;
