Let\u2019s be honest, the Patrik Laine situation is starting to drag on quite a bit.<\/p>\n

We thought something would happen before the trade freeze, but we\u2019re still waiting.<\/p>\n

We have to face reality: the Canadiens\u2019 return to action on February 26 is fast approaching.<\/p>\n

According to the latest rumors, the chances of seeing Laine moved before that date are big.<\/p>\n

“If the 27-year-old Finn sees any post-Olympics action, we expect it to be for someone other than the Canadiens.<\/p>\n

The Carolina Hurricanes have significant cap space and have two of Laine\u2019s best friends \u2013 Sebastian Aho and Nikolaj Ehlers \u2013 on the roster.”<\/p>\n

The Hurricanes don\u2019t have a pressing need for additional offensive production. They already sit fifth in the Eastern Conference with 197 goals scored this season.<\/p>\n

Defensively, they are also very solid, allowing only 163 goals. It\u2019s hard to see how Laine, with his less effective style in his own zone, would fit in there.<\/p>\n

One can imagine that Carolina would mainly want to use him as a constant threat on the power play. That would be a solid execution for a team aiming for the highest honors.<\/p>\n

With the available cap space in Carolina, the financial fit is possible. They could even receive an asset from the Canadiens to help facilitate the transaction.<\/p>\n

If Kent Hughes has to include an asset to move him, the Hurricanes could then flip that piece for depth. It\u2019s a strategy that makes sense.<\/p>\n

Still, seeing Laine wear a Hurricanes jersey would be something special. We\u2019ll be watching this closely, as March 6 is coming up fast.<\/p>\n
