Dylan Roberts, D-Steamboat Springs, authored Senate Resolution 26-008, recognizing each participant last week. The Milano Cortina Winter Olympics kicked off Friday, Jan. 6, with full information available at the NBC Sports Olympics website.

“This year, Colorado has more Olympians than any other state in our country,” Roberts said in introductory remarks for the resolution on the Senate floor. His district, Roberts notes, has “by far” the most Winter Olympians of any Colorado Senate district.

Unfortunately, no Winter Olympian hails from Fremont County in 2026. The figure skating pair of Ellie Kam and Danny O’Shea are from Colorado Springs.

As expected, the Colorado contingent features four downhill, two cross-country and eight freestyle skiers, in addition to ski jumpers and ski mountaineers, a first-time event.

Ice hockey fans can look for defenseman Jaccob Slavin of Erie wearing No. 74 and forward/center Brock Nelson of Warroad, Minn., wearing No. 29 on Team USA. In the NHL, Slavin plays for the Carolina Hurricanes and Nelson for the hometown Colorado Avalanche.

Malik Jones, a forward from Aurora, will appear with the U.S. sled hockey team in March during the Paralympics. He will wear No. 19.

Hunter Powell of Fort Collins will make his first Olympic appearance as a pusher on the bobsled team. Jason Colby of Steamboat Springs, also making his first Olympics, is being called a generational talent in ski jumping.

The largest contingent for Colorado is nine athletes in the snowboarding field. Alpine skiers Mikaela Shiffrin of Edwards and Lindsey Vonn of Vail are arguably the most popular Coloradans in the entire Olympic field, that is if you’ve missed Nelson as the center on the Avalanche’s second line and the leader of the first power play unit. He has 48 points (28 goals, 20 assists) in 53 games.

If you’re looking to root for other Avalanche stars not on Team USA, look no further than Canada. Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar and Devon Toews will skate for the team north of the border. Gabriel Landeskog and Artturi Lehkonen will play for Sweden. Joel Kiviranta is on Finland’s roster and Martin Kaut is playing for the Czech Republic.

Brian Porter is a special contributor to the Cañon City Daily Record.

(All air times are on the USA Network. Other programming may be available based on your streaming service.
