One guy who shouldn’t be anywhere near that conversation? Troy Stecher. He’s exactly the kind of steady presence you hang onto when things get wobbly.

Here are four reasons.

Reason 1: Stecher Has the Right Attitude

Stecher isn’t the flashiest player on the roster, but his attitude is ultra-positive. The guy loves playing in Toronto, and that shouldn’t be ignored. One of the absolute best feel-good moments of the season was the night when he got the home crowd going after a win.

That kind of pure joy might seem like the “small stuff,” but you could bottle it and pass it out for a pre-game libation; the team would probably be right in the playoff mix instead of trying to claw their way back in the Atlantic Division.

Reason 2: Stecher Isn’t Too Cool to Engage the Crowd

Players just don’t engage the crowd directly much anymore, but they should. It matters more than many people think. When a team goes through ups and downs, you need players who keep the mood light, keep things grounded, and remind everyone that the “good-ole hockey game” is supposed to be fun. Stecher does that better than most.

Reason 3: Stecher Works Like Someone Trying to Prove Something

One thing about Stecher: he never cheats the work. He’s not coasting on natural talent or size. Instead, he’s built his career on showing up and grinding. Coaches love that. Teammates feed off it. Fans love it.

Younger players also learn from it. Every team needs a couple of guys who push the pace just by how seriously they take the job. He’s one of those players who makes others better simply by the way he handles himself.

Troy Stecher has been great for the Toronto Maple Leafs since being picked up on waivers, playing more minutes than ever before.

Reason 4: Stecher Fits Anywhere You Put Him

Stecher’s bounced around the league enough to know how to adjust quickly, and that’s a bigger asset than people give credit for. Need someone to fill in on special teams? He can do it. Need steady third-pair minutes? Done. Need someone to cover a gap after injuries hit? He’s reliable.

The Maple Leafs don’t have a ton of defensive depth to spare, so moving someone who can plug into different spots doesn’t make a lot of sense, especially not heading into the stretch run.

The Bottom Line for Stecher and the Maple Leafs

If the Maple Leafs really have Stecher on a trade list somewhere, they might want to rethink that. He’s the type who holds a team together when stuff around them gets messy—positive, works his tail off, and can slide into pretty much any situation.

Trading him wouldn’t just leave a hole on the blue line; it would chip away at the spirit of the room. Sometimes the smartest move is keeping the player who gives you more than his stat line. Stecher is exactly the kind of player you want on your team.

Related: Whatever Happened to ex-Maple Leafs Goalie Ilya Samsonov?

Discover more from NHL Trade Talk

Subscribe to get the latest posts sent to your email.

There’s been a bunch of chatter lately about the Toronto Maple Leafs moving players, and fans are already…

[5106
5,20,5172,4,2175,66,31,5171,5928
0":"post-452742","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-toronto-maple-leafs","8":"tag-hockey","9":"tag-maple-leafs","10":"tag-mapleleafs","11":"tag-nhl","12":"tag-top-story","13":"tag-toronto","14":"tag-toronto-maple-leafs","15":"tag-torontomapleleafs","16":"tag-troy-stecher
["GET
