What remains unclear, however, is how deep the sell-off could go once the almost three-week roster freeze lifts.

While one phone call can change everything and plenty is still to be decided, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman doesn’t expect anything drastic out of Toronto, with the focus revolving around pending UFAs Bobby McMann and Scott Laughton.

Friedman said:

“I think they’re going to sell. I think they’re going to talk about McMann and I think they’re going to talk about Laughton for sure. And I think they’ll listen on some other things, but I don’t know how much deeper than that it’s going to get,”

The 29-year-old McMann and 31-year-old Laughton are both in the final years of their two-year, $2.7 million and five-year, $15 million contracts, respectively.

McMann has tallied 32 points (19 goals, 13 assists) in 56 games this season, while Laughton has recorded 11 points (eight goals, three assists) across 39 appearances.

Other Maple Leafs to Keep an Eye On

While Friedman suggests there won’t be any fireworks, he did acknowledge that other possibilities remain on the table, and there are still several intriguing names Toronto could consider moving beyond McMann and Laughton.

Treliving Maple Leafs

Fellow pending UFAs Calle Jarnkrok and Troy Stecher could naturally be dealt given their contract status, though extending the latter should certainly be explored based on the boost he’s provided on the blue line since being claimed off waivers.

Pending RFAs Matias Maccelli and Nick Robertson could also garner some attention, while players on term—such as Brandon Carlo, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and Nicolas Roy—have already popped up in the rumor mill, with reports linking them to the Edmonton Oilers.

That feels like about as far as Treliving will go ahead of the deadline, so anyone expecting a goaltender to be moved or Morgan Rielly to waive his no-movement clause will likely have to wait until the offseason, when more significant changes tend to be made.

Before getting there, though, the first question that needs answering is whether Treliving will still be the one calling the shots after potentially missing the playoffs.

Next:

Discover more from NHL Trade Talk

<p class="has-text-align-center"
