It won\u2019t take long for Blue Jackets<\/a> teammates Zach Werenski<\/a> and Elvis Merzlikins<\/a> to face each other at the 2026 Winter Olympics<\/a> in Milan, Italy.<\/p>\n

The Blue Jackets\u2019 Olympians, whose lockers are next to each other at Nationwide Arena, will make their Olympic debuts for the U.S. (Werenski)<\/a> and Latvia (Merzlikins) on Feb. 12.<\/p>\n

Werenski will be wearing the Stars and Stripes<\/a> for the third time in the past calendar year, after leading all scorers <\/a>at the NHL\u2019s first 4 Nations Face-Off last February and then helping the U.S. win its first men\u2019s world championship since 1933<\/a> in May 2025. Werenski has also played for his country three times at world championships and twice at world junior championships.<\/p>\n

Merzlikins has extensive international experience<\/a> playing for Latvia, including six world championships, an Olympic qualifying tournament and three world junior championships.<\/p>\n

Will Zach Werenski and Elvis Merzlikins chirp each other at Milano Cortina 2026?<\/p>\n

No guarantees on this one from Merzlikins, who is known for talking to the opposition during games. Werenski doesn\u2019t plan on getting any verbal jabs against Merzlikins, but no guarantees from him either.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t chirp,\u201d Werenski said Feb. 4. \u201cOnly in practice against him. I don\u2019t like to jinx anything, but, honestly, I hope he goes over there and has an unbelievable tournament and shows everyone how good of a goalie he is. I\u2019m rooting for him. \u2026 When we\u2019re playing him, I\u2019m all business, but when we\u2019re not, I\u2019m a fan of his and I\u2019m looking forward to watching him.\u201d<\/p>\n
