When Kent Hughes took over the Montreal Canadiens on January 28, 2022, he stepped into one of the most difficult jobs in hockey. \u00a0A team coming off a almost completely random Stanley Cup Final appearance\u2026 A roster built for a different era\u2026. And a system that needed a major talent injection.<\/p>\n
Whenever I hear the Montr\u00e9al Canadiens are rebuilding I laugh.\u00a0 This is the city that breathes hockey more than any other that I’ve ever been to. \u00a0Sorry Toronto, but Montreal takes the cake for me. \u00a0And this is the city that loves it stars more than any city I’ve ever seen. \u00a0maybe in any sport. \u00a0Remember how emotional Alexei Kovalev\u2019s departure was. \u00a0<\/p>\n
And this is why I chose Kent Hughes next in this series\u2026He did this in a very magical way. \u00a0It was pretty clear and open, which is hard to do in Montreal. The only sleight-of-hand may have been naming Martin St. Louis as a surprise Coach\u2026. That really shifted the pressure a bit, and St. Louis \u00a0handled it like a juggernaut.<\/p>\n
Unlike some rebuilds that follow a straight line, Hughes\u2019 tenure has been layered, aggressive, and constantly adjusting. And when you study every trade he\u2019s made since taking the job, you can see something fascinating: \u00a0His identity as a general manager didn\u2019t arrive fully formed. \u00a0It evolved. \u00a0And that evolution tells you exactly what kind of GM he is becoming.<\/p>\n
Phase 1: The Reset (2022)<\/p>\n
Every new GM has a first decision to make: Patch it\u2026 or tear it down. \u00a0Hughes chose direction immediately.<\/p>\n

Once the Canadiens stabilized, the moves started to shift again. Now it wasn\u2019t just about selling.<\/p>\n

The most recent phase may end up defining his tenure.<\/p>\n
