Brendan Gallagher won’t be with the Montreal Canadiens forever.

When number 11 leaves the organization, the leadership group will have to evolve. Nick Suzuki remains the unquestioned captain of this rebuild.

We can agree that Mike Matheson currently plays a pillar role. His experience stabilizes the defensive corps every time they take the ice at the Bell Centre.

Yet the next wave is already knocking on the door for a letter. Let’s call it like it is: Cole Caufield has become the offensive face of the team.

His enthusiasm and offensive production make him a natural candidate for an assistant role. The locker room already seems to gravitate toward his contagious energy.

Who will support Nick Suzuki in the Canadiens’ next leadership era?

“When Gallagher leaves, what will the Canadiens’ captain and assistant group look like?

Listen, there are internal candidates, for sure. I think Juraj Slafkovsky right now is part of the young leadership group on this team. Does Lane Hutson deserve an “A” with his work habits and the respect he has from his teammates? I think so. And what about Cole Caufield, who’s also a leader in the locker room? Cole Caufield is a tremendous leader, yes. One day he’ll wear a letter. I think so too.”

– Anthony Martineau

Kaiden Guhle is another name that frequently comes up in discussions. Despite his young age, he plays with remarkable maturity and solid execution.

It’s hard to see how the organization could ignore his quiet leadership. Guhle represents the physical and reliable identity management wants to project.

It’s simple: the Habs have a surplus of quality young leaders. Juraj Slafkovsky has also shown signs of leadership over the past few months.

His physical progression and offensive impact are starting to carry significant weight. He’s not afraid to take responsibility in key moments.

Kirby Dach will also need to be monitored if his health remains stable. A center of his size with that level of vision is a major asset.

Gallagher’s departure will officially mark the end of an era. It will be time for the new guard to fully take ownership of the locker room.

Let’s be honest, the future captaincy group looks very promising. The chemistry between Suzuki, Caufield, and Guhle is obvious to the fans.

Previously on All Montreal Hockey

POLL

1 HOUR AGO|42 ANSWERS

With Gallagher potentially on the way out, the Canadiens’ next ‘A’ isn’t who you think

Should Cole Caufield be the next permanent assistant captain?

Photo credit: Eric Bolte-Imagn Images Anthony Martineau’s question is sparking a fascinating debate this morning…

[5103
974,265,971,5,1748,264,21,5147,4,975,6045
0":"post-456405","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-montreal-canadiens","8":"tag-brendan-gallagher","9":"tag-canadiens","10":"tag-cole-caufield","11":"tag-hockey","12":"tag-kaiden-guhle","13":"tag-montreal","14":"tag-montreal-canadiens","15":"tag-montrealcanadiens","16":"tag-nhl","17":"tag-nick-suzuki","18":"tag-trade-deadline
["GET
