The 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics are in full swing, and it was another busy day in Italy, with more medals up for grabs on Friday. But the biggest story was the medal that wasn\u2019t won.<\/p>\n

Ilia Malinin falls off podium in huge free skate upset<\/p>\n

\u201cI blew it,\u201d Malinin told NBC after a shocking performance in the free skate, which saw multiple falls and ended with him off the podium, in eighth place. If Malinin had executed his skate, he would\u2019ve captured a near-certain gold medal.<\/p>\n

Instead, it was one of the most stunning collapses in Olympic figure skating history<\/a>, as Kazakhstan\u2019s Mikhail Shaidorov claimed gold, while Japan\u2019s Yuma Kagiyama took silver and Japan\u2019s Shun Sato won bronze.<\/p>\n

Team USA advances to semifinals after routing Italy<\/p>\n

Team USA women’s hockey continued its dominance during these Olympics, routing Italy 6-0 in the quarterfinals<\/a>. The Americans are now 5-0 and have scored 26 goals, while allowing just one.<\/p>\n

The U.S. outshot Italy 51-6. Kendall Coyne Schofield scored back-to-back goals early in the second period to break open the game.<\/p>\n

Lindsey Vonn said on Friday that she will need at least more surgeries after fracturing her leg during last Sunday’s Olympic downhill race.<\/p>\n

In message posted on social media, the 41-year-old American skier thanked supporters who have sent encouraging letters and stuffed animals while she remains in a Treviso hospital. She said that she is scheduled for a fourth surgery on her leg Saturday and could possibly return home to the U.S. where she will require another procedure.<\/p>\n

Americans Madison Chock and Evan Bates skated the routine of their lives on Wednesday night in figure skating\u2019s ice dance event \u2026 only to watch in horror and heartbreak<\/a> as judges controversially deemed the routine of France\u2019s\u00a0 Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron a more worthy one. Chock and Bates ended up with a silver medal \u2014 a titanic achievement, of course, but a \u201cbittersweet\u201d one, in Chock\u2019s words, when you think you ought to have won gold.<\/p>\n

On CBS News, Chock called for \u201ctransparent judging\u201d to help viewers understand what\u2019s happening. \u201cI think it’s also important for the skaters, that the judges be vetted and reviewed to make sure that they are also putting out their best performance,\u201d she added, \u201cbecause there’s a lot on the line for the skaters when they’re out there giving it their all, and we deserve to have the judges also giving us their all and for it to be a fair and even playing field.\u201d<\/p>\n

The figure skating establishment appears to be shrugging this off as just one of them skating deals, yet another in a long line of what-are-you-gonna-do judging frustrations. It\u2019s not as egregious as the Salt Lake City skating scandal of 2002<\/a>, when a French judge conceded that she\u2019d been pressured to favor a Russian pairs duo that eventually won gold \u2026 right?<\/p>\n

Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych\u2019s appeal to gain reinstatement to skeleton competition at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games has been denied.<\/p>\n

Heraskevych filed an urgent appeal Friday morning with the Court of Arbitration for Sport over his disqualification from the Olympic Games<\/a> for refusing to change a helmet honoring fellow athletes who died during Russia\u2019s invasion of his home country.<\/p>\n

Heraskevych, according to a CAS statement<\/a>, argued that the decision to ban him from the Olympics is \u201cdisproportionate, unsupported by any technical or safety violation and causes irreparable sporting harm to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heraskevych registered the appeal with the CAS\u2019s ad hoc division, which is on site in Milan and can rule on cases in less than 24 hours. The CAS appointed a sole arbitrator to \u201cconsider the matter with urgency.\u201d Early Friday evening in Milan, the appeal was denied.<\/p>\n

The U.S. women\u2019s curling team beat Canada in round-robin play on Friday 9-8<\/a>. It\u2019s the first time in nine Olympic meetings that the Americans have been victorious against their northern neighbors.<\/p>\n

The match was tight through the first five ends with Canada clinging to a 3-2 lead. In the sixth end, the U.S. roared ahead with four points. Canada did not back off, scoring two in the seventh and adding three in the ninth.<\/p>\n

Holding the hammer, Tara Peterson scored two on the last shot of the match to give the Americans their second victory of the tournament.<\/p>\n

The U.S. women improve to 2-1 and resume play on Saturday against Japan (1:05 p.m. ET).<\/p>\n

There are now no members of the U.S. team in the event with Dawson withdrawing. He said he wanted to shift his focus to the team pursuit, which will see the quarterfinals in that event take place on Sunday, and next Thursday’s individual 1,500m.<\/p>\n

Dawson took part in the 5,000m last week and finished eighth.<\/p>\n

Dawson’s decision \u201cdoes not come as a surprise and always was a part of the options coming,” said U.S. coach Gabe Girard.<\/p>\n

The 29-year-old Norwegian cross-country skier was victorious in Friday’s men’s 10km free for his third gold medal<\/a> of the Milan Cortina Games. He has now won three golds in all three events he’s competed in, adding the 20km skiathlon and Individual sprint to his haul in Italy.<\/p>\n

Kl\u00e6bo ties fellow Norwegian skiers Bj\u00f8rn D\u00e6hlie, Marit Bj\u00f8rgen and Ole Einar Bj\u00f8rndalen with eight career gold medals. He could soon hold the record all by himself with the men’s 4 x 7.5km relay, men’s team sprint and 50km mass start still left on his competition schedule.<\/p>\n

Kl\u00e6bo won three golds in Pyeongchang and two more in Beijing four years ago, along with a silver and bronze.<\/p>\n
