Dominik Shine enjoyed a memorable night with his second hat trick of the season and moving into third place on the Grand Rapids Griffins\u2019 all-time goal scoring list in a 5-0 win against the Texas Stars<\/p>\n
And Amadeus Lombardi tried hard to make it an even better night for the veteran Shine by trying to decline an assist. The Griffins had announced that Shine had set a new franchise record of 11 career unassisted goals. No assist was given when the goal was announced. But after reviewing the video, an assist was awarded to Lombardi for directing the puck to Shine from along the boards (SEE VIDEO BELOW).<\/p>\n
Usually, players are trying to get credit for an assist after a game, but Lombardi told coach Dan Watson in post-game, with the media nearby, that he neither asked for, nor wanted, the assist. But that\u2019s not how it works.<\/p>\n
With his hat trick, Shine has 95 career goals with the AHL team. He moved past Mitch Callahan and moves closer to Francis Pare (102) and Michel Picard (158).<\/p>\n
However, the Lombardi moment may be symbolic of how tight knit the Griffins are.\u00a0 That undoubtedly has aided Grand Rapids\u2019 league-best record of 37-7-2-1 through 47 games (77 points). After experiencing a handful of unsatisfactory performances in January, the Griffins have now won five of their last six.<\/p>\n
Sebastian Cossa\u2019s 26-save shutout was his fifth of the year, the most by a Griffins netminder since Jared Coreau posted six in 2015-16.\u00a0Defenseman Shai Buium also scored his first goal of the season. He has five points in his past three games. Along with Lombardi, Antti Tuomisto, Nate Danielson and Ondrej Becher added assists.<\/p>\n
