{"id":460796,"date":"2026-02-17T13:34:18","date_gmt":"2026-02-17T13:34:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/460796\/"},"modified":"2026-02-17T13:34:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-17T13:34:18","slug":"alex-newhook-appears-far-from-return-as-concerning-signs-emerge-at-canadiens-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/460796\/","title":{"rendered":"Alex Newhook appears far from return as concerning signs emerge at Canadiens practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t  &#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/642682.webp.webp\" style=\"width:100%;\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Photo of Alex Newhook\" title=\"Photo of Alex Newhook\"\/>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Photo credit: Screenshot<\/p>\n<p>While the hockey world\u2019s attention is focused on the Olympic tournament in Italy, there is action happening in Brossard for the Montreal Canadiens.<\/p>\n<p>We had all assumed that forward Alex Newhook would return to play after the Olympic break, but clearly that will not be the case after all.<\/p>\n<p>We were shown some concerning images today from Brossard in that regard.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the observations regarding Alex Newhook\u2019s health are indeed not very reassuring for what lies ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Journalist Marc-Olivier Cook, who was on site, reported that the forward was training alone this morning.<\/p>\n<p>What is particularly worrying is the player\u2019s apparent pain, as he was grimacing frequently while skating on the ice.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s be honest, seeing an athlete grimace during non-contact individual drills is never a good sign during rehabilitation.<\/p>\n<p>It really does not feel like a return to play is imminent.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Newhook was taking a lot of time before being able to string together sequences of drills.<\/p>\n<p>A return that seems far off for Alex Newhook<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s be real, those who were hoping for a quick return after the Olympic break will probably need to lower their expectations.<\/p>\n<p>The observer\u2019s assessment on site is clear: Newhook still looks very far from an official return to play.<\/p>\n<p>There is still a small positive, as he seems able to reach a certain level of speed in his movements.<\/p>\n<p>However, fluidity and comfort are clearly not there for the Canadiens\u2019 number 15.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadiens\u2019 medical staff will need to continue managing this situation with extreme caution.<\/p>\n<p>We will have to monitor whether his condition improves in the coming days, but the images described this morning in Brossard suggest patience will be required.<\/p>\n<p>Solo session for Newhook this morning.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s grimacing a lot while skating and taking a long time before moving on to the next drills.<\/p>\n<p>He still looks very far from a return to play, even though he\u2019s able to generate some speed in his movements. &#8211;
