The United States topped Canada, 2-1, in the men’s hockey gold medal game on Sunday morning. Hughes, 24, scored the game-winning goal for the American team. The Americans won the gold medal in men’s hockey for the first time since 1980.<\/p>\n

Hughes, who plays for the New Jersey Devils, has become a household name. One of his old comments on Pride Night has resurfaced in the wake of his gold medal win.<\/p>\n

Pride Night has become a sensitive topic for some in the NHL. Some players refuse to wear rainbow-colored clothing items and refuse to participate in the festivities. Players have cited their own personal or religious views.<\/p>\n
The majority of NHL teams now partake in Pride Night, though. Hughes, though, stands by the Pride Nights and what they mean.<\/p>\n

Hughes takes pride in Pride Night participation<\/p>\n
Hughes says that it’s important to participate.<\/p>\n
“I think a bunch of the guys on our team, we’re looking forward to that. Obviously, with how we grew up, my family really supports that too,” Hughes said.<\/p>\n
“I can’t speak for other teams, but I know in New Jersey that was a night where everyone on our team was really welcoming. It wasn’t even a thought about not doing it.”<\/p>\n

Hughes, who went No. 1 overall in the NHL Draft, boasted about his country following the win, too.<\/p>\n
“This is all about our country right now,” he said.<\/p>\n
“I love the U.S.A. I love my teammates, it\u2019s unbelievable. The USA Hockey brotherhood, it\u2019s so strong. We had so much support from ex-players, and I\u2019m so proud to be American today.”<\/p>\n
