The 34-year-old forward was in the final season of a <a href=\"https:\/\/puckpedia.com\/player\/artemi-panarin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:seven-year, $81.5 million contract;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">seven-year, $81.5 million contract<\/a> he signed with the Rangers on July 1, 2019, and the Blueshirts decided to cut ties with the pending unrestricted free agent instead of re-sign him as part of their stated \u201cretool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Since Panarin had a no-movement clause in his contract, he controlled where the Rangers could trade him. And in the end, Panarin said he\u2019d <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/articles\/rangers-gm-chris-drury-opens-030917037.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:only accept a trade to the Kings;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">only accept a trade to the Kings<\/a>. He then agreed to a two-year, $22 million contract with the Kings after they sent forward prospect Liam Greentree and up to two conditional draft picks to the Rangers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c7 years ago I chose New York with my heart and I didn\u2019t chose (sic) wrong! Panarin had 607 points (205 goals, 402 assists) in 482 regular-season games with the Rangers, including a career-best 49 goals and 120 points in 2023-24. Those 120 points were <a href=\"https:\/\/records.nhl.com\/nyr\/records\/skater-records\/points\/skater-most-points-one-season\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:second most in a single season;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">second most in a single season<\/a> for the Blueshirts, behind only Jaromir Jagr, who had 123 points in 2005-06.<\/p>\n<p>Panarin ranks\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/records.nhl.com\/nyr\/records\/skater-records\/assists\/most-assists-career\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:eighth all-time;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">eighth all-time<\/a>\u00a0for the Rangers in assists, ninth in points, and 14th in goals.
