Former United States women\u2019s soccer star\u00a0Megan Rapinoe\u00a0criticized the U.S. men\u2019s hockey team for their reaction to President Donald Trump\u2019s phone call in the locker room<\/a> following their gold medal win over Canada at Milan Cortina, calling the players and president \u201ca clown\u201d over what she said was a \u201ctrash\u201d remark about the women\u2019s gold medal hockey team.<\/p>\n

Rapinoe, an outspoken critic of Trump, spoke at length about the postgame interaction with the president during the latest episode of her podcast with WNBA great Sue Bird,\u00a0\u201cA Touch More.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

The retired soccer star took issue with Trump\u2019s call, specifically his joke that he would also \u201chave\u201d to invite the women\u2019s team to the\u00a0State of the Union address, which took place on Tuesday, and the men\u2019s reaction to the remark.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe United States\u2019 men\u2019s\u00a0hockey team\u00a0in their utter moment of glory, childhood dreams come true, one in a lifetime accomplishment, sensational \u2013 ruined it for themselves because they allowed themselves to be totally co-opted by a clown. And now, you\u2019re a clown. You look like a clown,\u201d she began.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Rapinoe did not play a clip of the remark, adding, \u201cWe\u2019re not going to platform that trash.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

She went on to admit that she understands the environment and how the team could \u201cget yourself wrapped in this moment,\u201d but expressed her disappointment in the men\u2019s team not respecting their counterparts \u2013 or themselves.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026 And then you just gave this whole moment over to this person, who you know is just only going to use it for him, going to totally co-opt it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you respect you more than to have that moment be taken by someone, who for no reason at all, just takes a huge swing and a jab at women who did that exact same thing that you did.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rapinoe also took issue with\u00a0FBI\u00a0Director Kash Patel\u2019s presence in the locker room<\/a>, recalling her playing days and how she would\u2019ve handled those situations differently.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cKash Patel is in the locker room, he\u2019s partying, he\u2019s chugging beers \u2013 I\u2019m not like decorum over everything, that\u2019s not what I need out of my FBI director, like what are we doing? That\u2019s just, whatever besides the point.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

She later added, \u201cI would have never\u2026 those people would never be allowed in our locker rooms.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bird added that her biggest issue with the interaction was seeing it knowing the relationship between both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams, which she called \u201cgenuine.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis person, who happens to be the president of the United States, makes a joke that is and feels dismissive, and I don\u2019t get the part where the men\u2019s hockey team is actually close with the women\u2019s hockey team,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf my friends were being dismissed in this way, why would I laugh ever? Period. Take the rest of it out. That\u2019s what I don\u2019t get.\u201d<\/p>\n

U.S. women\u2019s hockey star Hillary Knight<\/a> addressed the controversy on ESPN, calling the joke \u201cdistasteful,\u201d but defended the men\u2019s players.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there\u2019s a genuine level of support there and respect,\u201d she said. \u201cI think that\u2019s being overshadowed by a quick lapse. I think the guys were in a tough spot, so I think it\u2019s a shame this storyline and narrative has kind of blown up and overshadowing that connection and genuine interest in one another and cheering each other on.\u201d<\/p>\n
