However, a scrum late in the period gave the Red Wings the spark they needed, which led them to two goals in less than a minute to bring the game within one goal.

As the third period opened, the Hurricanes regained control of the momentum, though it wasn’t without its fair share of chaos.

After the Hurricanes scored two more goals, Taylor Hall took a high stick from Simon Edvinsson.

Hall, who had scored the first goal of the game, hunched over to grab his front tooth (albeit a false one) off the ice and promptly gave it to the Hurricanes’ head athletic trainer Doug Bennett, who couldn’t help but smile at the situation.

It earned the Hurricanes four minutes on the power play, but it ultimately failed to amount to another score.

However, during the power play, Sebastian Aho skated awkwardly into the boards, which dislodged the blade of his skate. Interestingly, instead of trying to goofily hopscotch away to the bench, Aho found another method to make his way safely to the pine by getting on his knee and using his proper skate to laterally push himself towards safety in a goaltender-esque fashion.

“That was unbelievably Yoda-like cerebral”
Sebastian Aho had a 200 IQ move to get back to the bench after he lost skate blade 🤣 pic.twitter.com/RQQscWbAAK

— Queen of the Puck (@rbarkleyhockey) March 1, 2026

With their win, the Hurricanes close out February with a perfect record, extend their winning streak to five, and their point streak to 12.

Monday, they will begin a four-game western road trip, beginning with the Seattle Kraken. Their next home game will be on March 10th versus the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Goaltending Was the Star

Frederik Andersen has always played well against the Red Wings. Going into Saturday’s game, his career record versus Detroit was 13-1-2, with a .920 save percentage, a 2.23 goals against average, and three shutouts.

While Saturday did not see a shutout, he only allowed two goals on 29 shots, which included 10 high-danger scoring chances (seven of which were in the second period). The two goals he did let in were top-corner shots, which are near-impossible for any goaltender to stop.

It seems the Olympics were just the stage Andersen needed to reset.

Rachel Barkley is a beat writer covering the Carolina Hurricanes for Carolina Hockey Now on Sportsnaut.
