That feel-good spell was tempered when Columbus equalized just 1:48 after a rare Scott Mayfield go-ahead goal, and with just a minute left in the middle period.

But at least the Islanders had made a game of it after things looked stark in the first 30 minutes. The Isles got the bounces to get back in the game, as well as a friendly review denying Columbus’ goalie interference challenge on the equalizer. The third was scoreless, setting the stage for the Isles’ bread and butter.

Because then came the hero: Simon Holmstrom took a long pass and a page out of his runningmate J-G Pageau’s play book by carrying down the right wing and going across the net for the winner. Instead of tucking through the pads like Pageau in OT two nights prior, Holmstrom used his long reach to go all the way around Jet Greaves.

It’s good eatin’ the Islanders are enjoying this year in overtime. There is definitely a fresher, smarter approach to OT than frustrating recent seasons, and there’s also the effect of having Matthew Schaefer around, but going 8-0 in OT through the first three quarters of the season is a run that will have you looking over your shoulder for Lady Luck’s sinister sibling.

For now, though, and as long as it rides, we’ll gladly take it.

The win gives the Isles four in a row and both on the road coming out of the Olympic break, keeping Metro chasers like Columbus behind.

Also: Anders Lee scored in consecutive games for the first time this season, scoring in his 900th game (tying Bobby Nystrom) and now his 901st (tying Brock Nelson). He has over 130 goals since the Isles retired John Tonelli’s #27 while allowing Lee to keep it and continue a bid to earn a banner of his own.

The Islanders are back home to face the Panthers Sunday night.

The Islanders pulled out yet another overtime win — their eighth in eight tries this season — and…

[5110
26255,5,122,3328,159,5190,5189,4
0":"post-478486","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-new-york-islanders","8":"tag-bits-o-islanders-news","9":"tag-hockey","10":"tag-islanders","11":"tag-new-york","12":"tag-new-york-islanders","13":"tag-newyork","14":"tag-newyorkislanders","15":"tag-nhl
["GET
