Hughes, who previously served as the Vancouver Canucks captain, has elevated the organization’s offense and defense. However, what is the latest on the Wild defenseman’s future in Minnesota?

It would be a “surprise” if Hughes doesn’t sign a contract extension with Minnesota, as reported by The Athletic’s Michael Russo and Joe Smith. Hughes was connected to multiple teams, such as the New Jersey Devils and Detroit Red Wings, when Vancouver wanted to trade him. Minnesota stepped up to the plate.

The 26-year-old defenseman has three goals and 33 assists in 29 games with the Wild. Hughes is also averaging 28:06 minutes of ice time per game. To this point, Hughes has enjoyed his time in Minnesota, but there are questions on whether he wants to play in New Jersey with his brothers or go home to Michigan.

If the Wild can make a massive run at the Stanley Cup in 2026, it could sway Hughes to sign a contract extension. However, if the Wild are a first-round exit, it could put his future with the organization in doubt. Hughes is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2026-27 NHL season.

The hope for Minnesota is that Hughes signs a long-term contract extension, pairing him with Matt Boldy and Brock Faber for the foreseeable future. If it becomes clear that Hughes won’t re-sign with the Wild, Minnesota might be inclined to trade him during the offseason instead.

Read More: Inside the Detroit Red Wings’ Failed Pursuit of Quinn Hughes

Austin Konenski is a sports writer at Sportsnaut, covering the NHL, MLB, NFL, NBA, and College Football.
