While many eyes around the NHL deadline are on buyers like the Minnesota Wild, Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes and other potential big-time contenders, the Utah Mammoth are quietly lurking in the weeds. And according to many, they’re leaving no stone unturned to make a big splash. Or several splashes.<\/p>\n

NHL source to me about the @utahmammoth<\/a> at the trade deadline: <\/p>\n

“They’re going to be very active. They’ve got their hands in a million different pies right now.”<\/p>\n

(that’s a lot of pies, fwiw)<\/p>\n

Insider Greg Wyshynski quotes an NHL source saying of Utah: “They’re going to be very active. They’ve got their hands in a million different pies right now.”<\/p>\n

Insider David Pagnotta<\/a> of The Fourth Period also advises us to watch out for a big move out of the Mammoth:<\/p>\n

They are looking. They’re trying to see if they can make a big splash here ahead of the deadline. We’re hearing them connected to guys like Robert Thomas. They’ve poked around on Vinny Trocheck. They’d like to add someone with term. When I spoke with Bill Armstrong, their general manager, towards the end of January, there was an understanding that yeah, there’s an opportunity to add here.<\/p>\n

He cautioned, however, that the upstart Mammoth aren’t about to give away their future for the present. But with the team sitting in the first Wild Card spot in the West right now, they’ve got a chance to really excite the fanbase in only their third season in Salt Lake City.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“They want somebody who’s going to be with this core for the foreseeable future.”<\/p>\n

In addition to Thomas, who has another five years left on his contract at a reasonable $8.125 million AAV, Pagnotta also points to Thomas’s Blues teammate Jordan Kyrou, who also has five years to run, at that same number. Trocheck has five years at $5.625M. He, however, does not want to head west, so Utah is probably out of the equation on him.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Even Elias Pettersson has been mentioned in connection with the Mammoth. That $11.6 million salary with six years remaining would be quite the noisy splash.\u00a0<\/p>\n
