The Hurricanes were bogged down by the Kraken’s defense, which was especially solid, as they struggled to generate meaningful offense.

Despite a six-on-four advantage during the waning moments of the game – the Hurricanes’ only power play – they were still unable to break through and tie the game.

Frederik Andersen, who played magnificently in Saturday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings, got the start for his first consecutive game since October. However, it didn’t go as well for him as the last one did. He faced four high-danger chances and managed a save percentage of .867. While he still played a decent game and made some quality saves, the decision to start him despite the exhaustion of travel, coupled with the fact that he played the full sixty minutes just two days before in their last game, was perplexing.

The loss Monday was the first the Hurricanes had in regulation since January 13th, effectively ending a 12-game point streak, alongside Andersen’s six-game point streak.

…At least we had bingo and more hot dog lore with Taylor Hall.

A Tough Night of Hard Hits

Seth Jarvis had a tough night outside of the stat sheet. Midway through the game, he received an uncalled high stick – then the Kraken scored moments later. That goal was removed due to being offside after a challenge, however.

In the third period, he took a hard fall after a collision with Jamie Oleksiak, which kept him off the ice for a bit. Thankfully, he returned to action soon after.

Additionally, Eric Robinson took a hit from Cale Fleury along the boards and appeared shaken up as he returned to the bench. He did not play another shift afterwards, but neither did his linemates Mark Jankowski and William Carrier, as the Hurricanes were down a goal with less than eight minutes remaining.

Rachel Barkley is a beat writer covering the Carolina Hurricanes for Carolina Hockey Now on Sportsnaut.
