The San Jose Sharks<\/a> have reached five-year contract extension with pending unrestricted free agent Kiefer Sherwood<\/a> carrying an annual cap hit of $5.75 million. <\/p>\n

The deal is worth a total of $28.75 million for Sherwood, who carries a cap hit of just $1.5 million under his current expiring contract. Sherwood\u2019s career earnings to date total less than $8 million. <\/p>\n

The move comes after speculation that the Sharks could look to flip Sherwood if they could not reach a new deal. <\/p>\n

Speculation around Sherwood\u2019s future seemed to start soon after he was acquired by San Jose from the Vancouver Canucks<\/a> for defenceman Cole Clayton<\/a> and two second-round picks in January.<\/p>\n

The 30-year-old winger has appeared in just five games with the Sharks, posting a goal and an assist Tuesday against the Montreal for his first points with the team. He had 17 goals and 23 points in 44 games with Vancouver before the trade. <\/p>\n

Sherwood posted a career-best 19 goals and 40 points in 78 games last year.<\/p>\n

The Sharks remain in the playoff race, sitting three points back of the Seattle Kraken<\/a> for the final wild-card spot with a game in hand. San Jose is also four points back of the Edmonton for third in the Pacific Division with three games in hand. <\/p>\n
