Weegar originally signed an eight-year contract extension worth $6.25 million a season with Calgary just before the 2022-23 season.

Maatta, 31, was acquired by Utah in its inaugural season after Utah was dealing with several injuries to its blue line. He fit like a glove in a big role for the former Utah Hockey Club, but now he is a shadow of that player with Utah having a healthy lineup. Maatta has just 19 points in 92 games for Utah, but the concern is that 18 of those came in 2024-25.

Utah bolsters its defence by adding Weegar to its lineup, and given the prospect pool and draft capital it still has left, they could add to their roster even more.

Castagna is a third-round pick (70th overall) by the Arizona Coyotes, and he’s stayed committed to playing at Cornell University. The 6-foot-2 centre has promise in his game, and if he cracks the NHL, he could showcase his high-energy game and strong skating for a young Calgary Flames team.

Utah trades for another big-ticket defenseman, and Calgary gets a respectable haul that includes a veteran player and multiple future pieces.

This showcases Utah’s commitment to winning now and just how aggressive the team is at being competitive long-term. Weegar going to Utah is also another top player trade on the boards, and is likely the first domino of many to fall before Friday’s trade deadline.

Discover more from Inside The Rink

Subscribe to get the latest posts sent to your email.

        Conrad Jack

Conrad Jack is a Manitoba-based media credentialed sportswriter covering the Winnipeg Jets (NHL) and the Manitoba Moose (AHL).
