The career of Elias Pettersson<\/a> so far has been a roller coaster, to say the least. In his first six seasons, he was the talk of the town in Vancouver. Now, he has quickly become the main subject of scrutiny among Vancouver Canucks<\/a> fans, media, and management alike. We will discuss how we got here and the fallout from Pettersson\u2019s press conference<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n

An Analysis of Elias Pettersson and Has He Gone from Hero to Zero?<\/p>\n

Pettersson, the rookie, was truly exciting to watch. With his quick skating ability and his set of hands, he made Canucks hockey exhilarating to watch again. We\u2019ll put aside his first few years for the moment and focus on his last four seasons, including the current one. In the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons combined, he had 73 goals and 118 assists for 191 points in 162 games. In the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons combined, he has 28 goals and 54 assists for 82 points in 117 games. Essentially, he has dropped off from producing first-line forward numbers to more of a second-line level of production.<\/p>\n

His $11.6 million salary cap hit is the biggest pain point for the franchise and the fans. He is the eighth-highest-paid player in the NHL this season, but he is not producing like a top-eight player in the league whatsoever. Yes, he may benefit from a change of scenery, and there are trade rumours<\/a> surrounding him, but realistically, will teams be lining up for his services? Probably not, at this moment.<\/p>\n

Why Has The Canucks Star Fallen Off His Former Pace?<\/p>\n

There are a myriad of reasons why the Canucks top centre has seen a dip in his offensive production. The first of which is his previous injuries. One thing to note is that aside from his wrist injury that he suffered in 2021 and his knee tendinitis in 2024, Pettersson\u2019s injuries have not been disclosed much at all. All we know is that he\u2019s been dealing with nagging upper-body injuries at points in the last few seasons. The knee tendinitis could be the root of the issue, as his play had dropped off in the latter half of the 2023-24 season.<\/p>\n

Another reason could be that he is lacking confidence. A common criticism of Pettersson is that he is a lot more hesitant to take shots. Again, we can look at the last four seasons and his shooting stats:<\/p>\n

2022-23: 80 GP, 39 goals, 257 shots taken (15.2% shooting percentage)
\n2023-24: 82 GP, 34 goals, 207 shots taken (16.4% shooting percentage)
\n2024-25: 64 GP, 15 goals, 109 shots taken (13.8% shooting percentage)
\n2025-26: 53 GP, 13 goals, 93 shots taken (14.0% shooting percentage)<\/p>\n

His shooting percentage has gone down, but not drastically. However, his shot output has gradually decreased from over three shots per game to under two shots per game. He has not had a shot in three consecutive games after the Olympic Break.<\/p>\n

Fallout From Pettersson\u2019s Latest Press Conference<\/p>\n

The final reason we will mention here is the hottest topic surrounding Pettersson currently: his attitude. His last press conference on Monday sparked a lot of discussion about Pettersson\u2019s attitude. \u201cI mean, I haven\u2019t lived up to expectations of the contract, and I\u2019ll be the first one to say it,\u201d\u00a0Pettersson stated. When asked about being in trade rumours, he said, \u201cI mean, it\u2019s you guys who make the trade rumours, so ask yourself.\u201d As a player who has struggled, fans were unhappy about the dismissive attitude toward the media, as well as the low-energy responses.<\/p>\n

It is not just the fans who have expressed displeasure toward the forward. Both of the recent Canucks coaches, Rick Tocchet and Adam Foote, have expressed criticism over the forward\u2019s practice habits and his offseason training. With no goals in his last 15 games, has Pettersson hit rock bottom? Adam Foote played a card that no coach should want to play, which was benching a player. However, on Saturday\u2019s game against the Seattle Kraken<\/a>, Foote felt it was necessary.<\/p>\n

This could be a fair question to ask. Has apathy set in for Elias Pettersson? A recent interview<\/a> with Patrick Johnston of The Province was potentially telling of how the forward feels about his struggles. \u201cTrust me, I\u2019m just trying to find my game every game. I haven\u2019t been my best for some time. Trust me, no one wants that more than me,\u201d\u00a0said Pettersson. Following a number of questions, the forward got up and left the interview in a tense, emotional state. While he does lead all forwards in shot blocks with 89, and is responsible defensively, he knows he needs to be better. The most important thing is that he still cares about playing hockey and about his team.<\/p>\n

The Canucks, as we know, are last in the NHL by a wide margin. Apathy in the locker room could be justified, but when the on-ice product is as bad as it has been, with just two wins in their last 22 games, fans want to see more effort, at the very least. If they continue on their current path, the Canucks could see a massive drop-off in game attendance sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n
