The Calgary Flames continued their rebuild in a one-for-one exchange with the New York Rangers<\/a>. The Flames parted ways with Jacob Battaglia, as they continue to add to their prospect pool.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Othmann has had issues cracking the Rangers’ lineup in the last two seasons, despite his 1st-round pedigree.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Along the way, he’s had to deal with injuries and leadership changes, which proved to be obstacles for Othmann’s tenure with the Rangers, being blocked by both ex-head coach Peter Laviolette last season and coach Mike Sullivan this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The move will ensure that Othmann gets a shot at a spot in the Flames rebuild<\/a> that has had an injection of young talent through trades and drafts since general manager Craig Conroy took over.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Othmann, a 23-year-old forward, was selected 16th overall by the Rangers in 2021 while playing for the OHL’s Flint Firebirds. He’d later join the Petersborough Pete’s and win an OHL championship in 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After that season, he turned pro and joined the New York Rangers organization, with aspirations to make the jump from the AHLto the NHL. However, the former 1st-round pick has only played 42 games in the NHL with the Rangers, and spent the majority of his professional career with the AHL’s Hartford Wolfpack, where he played 41 games and scored 85 points.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Battaglia, who joins the Rangers, was described as a “hard-shooting winger” with limited skating abilities. It’s difficult to discern his true ceiling, according to The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He\u2019s a hard-shooting winger with good secondary skill. Below-average skating could be a limiter up levels.<\/p>\n

Battaglia’s draft year saw him score 65 points in 67 games with the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs. An explanation for the trade could be that his numbers dropped to 43 points in 58 games split between the Firebirds and Frontenacs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Both players could find themselves as a call-up option in the future, as the teams were sellers today.\u00a0<\/p>\n
