Liljegren will don number 27, and Kampf will wear number 64.<\/p>\n<p>Timothy Liljegren, #27<\/p>\n<p>Liljegren\u2019s new digits are a change from the number 37 he wore in his prior two NHL stops with the Toronto Maple Leafs and San Jose Sharks. No one on the Capitals currently wears 37, but the last to do so was legendary goaltender Olaf Kolzig, making the number unofficially retired.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/4101367\/2023\/01\/25\/maple-leafs-jersey-numbers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">According to a 2023 article on The Athletic from Joshua Kloke<\/a>, it doesn\u2019t sound like Liljegren will be too upset to leave the number 37 in the past.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just got the number,\u201d Liljegren <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/4101367\/2023\/01\/25\/maple-leafs-jersey-numbers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said then<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t care about the number. I don\u2019t have a special number. I\u2019ve played on so many different teams, I\u2019ve had so many different numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before Liljegren, twenty other players have worn 27 while with the Capitals. Some of the most notable names to do so include Paul Mulvey, Dave Christian, Craig Berube, Ben Clymer, Karl Alzner, and, most recently, Alex Alexeyev.<\/p>\n<p>David Kampf, #64<\/p>\n<p>Kampf has only worn the number 64 in the NHL since his debut with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2017.
