Downing-Imagn Images

The Toronto Maple Leafs may have been without a first round pick for Nicolas Roy, had Colorado not picked up Nazem Kadri first.

According to a report from insider Darren Dreger, Nicolas Roy went for a first-round pick in part due to Colorado Avalanche GM Chris MacFarland being worried that he wouldn’t be able to find another option in a trade.

It was reported by Marco D’Amico of ‘RG Media’ days before the deal that Calgary Flames management nixed a potential trade agreed upon for Nazem Kadri to join the Avalanche prior to the Roy deal, which caused them to pivot to Toronto.

Nazem Kadri being dealt earlier could have put Leafs in worse trade spot

Finally acquiring Kadri from the Calgary Flames minutes before the deadline, it’s possible the Leafs would not have gotten a first for Roy, or that he wouldn’t have moved at all, if the Avalanche had gotten a deal done for Kadri prior.

Darren Dreger’s reporting indicates that Nicolas Roy may have been a panic buy for Colorado in the case that Kadri didn’t end up moving to the Avs.

The news aligns with insider reports that Kadri wanted to return to Colorado, and that management has been hesitant to deal Kadri despite being outside of the playoff race, something that ownership has been insistent on since the start of the season.

For Toronto, they could have lost out on their chance at getting a first-round pick for Roy had Colorado not been in a serious need for Kadri, the Avs thinking that deal was dead after being pulled.

Roy, as a defensively responsible, penalty-killing right-handed center, had clear value that made him worth a first-rounder to teams.

Having failed to gain a first for Bobby McMann and Oliver Ekman-Larsson as was hoped, Toronto benefited from a deal that could have been unavailable to them due to external factors.

Roy trade shows urgency is essential for Leafs in future trade talks

The Nicolas Roy trade reveals one necessity that the Toronto Maple Leafs need to take when it comes to doing business, and it is to be proactive.

The Leafs had held firm until the end for the right deal, and had Colorado not come asking, they could have gone through the deadline without finding a first round pick for the center.

But the Leafs also didn’t wait for a potential better offer, and didn’t let the Flames get back in on Kadri first and close Roy’s trade window for Toronto.

Having taken the first chance to get a first round pick for Nicolas Roy, the Toronto Maple Leafs benefited from not playing the waiting game, and it may be the best way forward.

With positions that the Leafs were offering, Ekman-Larsson at RHD, Laughton at C, and McMann at LW, other teams moved fast and gained more in return for comparable players. The Leafs had to have the ability to move quick and exploit buyers.

The offseason could be a test for Brad Treliving and not waiting. Having told reporters that he wanted to fit the “right Mitch Marner replacement” that checked all boxes, he may have to accept imperfect options.

Previously on Hockey Patrol

POLL

7 HOURS AGO|109 ANSWERS

The Maple Leafs got a first-round pick for Nic Roy only because Colorado made a desperate mistake

Qould the Leafs have still gotten a first for Roy if Calgary didn’t initially pull out of Kadri talks?
