{"id":498451,"date":"2026-03-11T17:55:17","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T17:55:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/498451\/"},"modified":"2026-03-11T17:55:17","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T17:55:17","slug":"utah-mammoth-sign-f-nick-schmaltz-to-eight-year-contract-extension","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/498451\/","title":{"rendered":"Utah Mammoth sign F Nick Schmaltz to eight-year contract extension"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">SALT LAKE CITY (AP) \u2014 Forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/nick-schmaltz\/8477951\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/nick-schmaltz\/8477951\" target=\"_blank\">Nick Schmaltz<\/a> re-signed with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/utah-mammoth\/68\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/utah-mammoth\/68\" target=\"_blank\">Utah Mammoth<\/a> on Wednesday, agreeing to an eight-year contract extension worth $64 million rather than going to free agency this summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Schmaltz will count $8 million against the salary cap annually through the 2033-34 NHL season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThere was never a doubt that Utah is where I want to play the rest of my career, and I\u2019m thrilled to sign an eight-year extension,\u201d Schmaltz said. \u201cWe have a great core of players, and I know we can do some special things together here in Utah. We have a very bright future, and I am thankful to (owners) Ryan and Ashley Smith for wanting me to be a part of the group that will one day bring a Stanley Cup to Utah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Schmaltz, 30, is second on the team in scoring with 59 points in 64 games. His hot start of 16 points in 10 games helped put Utah on track to make the playoffs in the franchise\u2019s second season since moving to Salt Lake City and its first as the Mammoth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cNick is a tremendous player and person, who is very deserving of this contract,\u201d general manager Bill Armstrong said. \u201cWe expect him to continue producing on the ice and leading our young, skilled forwards for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Last fall, the Mammoth signed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/logan-cooley\/8483431\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/logan-cooley\/8483431\" target=\"_blank\">Logan Cooley<\/a> for $80 million over the next eight years. Schmaltz\u2019s current contract, which paid him an average of just under $6 million a season, expired June 30.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of momentum building around our team, and extending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/nick-schmaltz\/8477951\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/nick-schmaltz\/8477951\" target=\"_blank\">Nick Schmaltz<\/a> is an important part of continuing that,\u201d Ryan Smith said. \u201cUtah is becoming a true destination in the NHL, and Nick\u2019s long-term commitment reflects the excitement around what we\u2019re building here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Mammoth hold the first wild card spot in the Western Conference, six points ahead of second wild card Seattle through Tuesday\u2019s games.
