The Edmonton Oilers<\/a> entered Tuesday\u2019s matchup against the Colorado Avalanche<\/a> looking to build momentum against one of the best teams this season.<\/p>\n

Instead, the game turned into a controversial affair after a second-period collision<\/a> involving Oilers goaltender Connor Ingram and Avalanche star forward Nathan MacKinnon.<\/p>\n

With 37 seconds remaining in the second period on a Colorado power play, MacKinnon drove toward the net after a pass from Brock Nelson.<\/p>\n

Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse made contact with MacKinnon, and the Avalanche forward crashed into Ingram, who went down and was later seen with an open wound on his forehead.<\/p>\n

MacKinnon was assessed a five-minute major penalty<\/a> for goaltender interference on the play and after video review, the penalty was upheld, carrying an automatic game misconduct and his ejection from the game.<\/p>\n

Colorado head coach Jared Bednar disputed<\/a> the call on the ice after the game.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no chance that he hits the goalie if Nurse doesn\u2019t run into him,\u201d Bednar said. \u201cI don\u2019t care if he\u2019s injured or not injured, it\u2019s a severe crash or not a severe crash. It\u2019s not a penalty.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the game, Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch addressed<\/a> Ingram\u2019s status, confirming he’d suffered a concussion.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, you have to protect your goalies. It wasn\u2019t on purpose, but you have to be careful with goaltenders,\u201d Knoblauch said. \u201cObviously, they lost a good player.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was concussion protocol. He’s feeling well. Obviously, that can change, but he was not allowed to come back just because of [the] concussion spotter.”<\/p>\n

Ingram skated off under his own power but did not return to the game under protocol rules. Tristan Jarry, meanwhile, entered the game in relief and stopped 11 of 12 shots to help secure a 4-3 win for Edmonton.<\/p>\n

The Oilers improved to 32-25-8 with the victory and sit second in the Pacific Division. Edmonton will visit the Dallas Stars<\/a> on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. ET.<\/p>\n
