Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Dan Muse told the Deseret News on Saturday that his team had to be wary of the Utah Mammoth\u2019s rush. <\/p>\n

Five minutes into the game, the public saw why: Dylan Guenther scored on a shot off the rush, and just a minute and a half later, Guenther scored again, giving the Mammoth overwhelming odds of winning the game. <\/p>\n

But that didn\u2019t happen, as the Penguins came back to win 4-3.<\/p>\n

Mammoth fans online blamed it on the officiating \u2014 six Utah penalties compared to Pittsburgh\u2019s three, with several missed calls \u2014 but the team refused to do the same.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe lack of maturity today in our game, in our management, cost us the game,\u201d said Mammoth head coach Andr\u00e9 Tourigny. \u201cWe were in full control.\u201d<\/p>\n

Defenseman Ian Cole, the most experienced member of the team, sang the same song.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to critique or speculate on that,\u201d he said of the officiating. \u201cIt\u2019s something that we don\u2019t have a ton of control over. We have control over what we do on the ice, for sure. <\/p>\n

\u201cIn terms of the decision-making as to what is a penalty and what isn\u2019t, we can\u2019t control that, but we can do a much better job in terms of putting ourselves in positions to not take penalties that are, we\u2019ll call it, unnecessary.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sure, there could have been a couple extra calls in favor of the home team. Pittsburgh native Logan Cooley absorbed more abuse than a punching bag on Saturday, but with the Mammoth being 26th in the league on the power play and the Penguins having the second-best penalty kill, Utah would have been much better off to simply not let the game get to a point where there were tons of penalties.<\/p>\n

Speaking of things that need to be avoided, Cooley nearly caused 16,000 heart attacks at the Delta Center as he crashed hard into the goalpost for the second time this season. The first<\/a>, of course, caused him to miss 28 games with a lower-body injury.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Cooley stayed down for a long while after the collision, eventually being helped off the ice by JJ Peterka and head athletic trainer Dave Zenobi while refusing to put any weight on his left leg \u2014 the same one that was injured earlier in the season.<\/p>\n

Mammoth nation collectively exhaled, though, when Cooley came back just minutes later. He finished out the game on a regular rotation with his line mates, showing no visible signs of discomfort.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s huge,\u201d Guenther said of Cooley\u2019s return. \u201cHe\u2019s built well and he drives the net hard, and we don\u2019t want him to stop doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tourigny agreed, using Connor McDavid, arguably the best hockey player in the world, as an example. In his rookie season, McDavid broke his collarbone<\/a> as he drove to the net with a full head of speed and crashed into the end boards.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s still going at the net pretty good. Still a pretty good player,\u201d Tourigny said. \u201cThat\u2019s hockey. Stuff will happen. He\u2019s fine. Life goes on.\u201d<\/p>\n

What goes into stopping a skid?<\/p>\n

After three straight wins to begin their recent eastern road trip, the Mammoth have now lost four consecutive games. <\/p>\n

Two of them were in overtime, which helps them incrementally in the playoff race, but it\u2019s not a sustainable way to keep their playoff spot.<\/p>\n

Tourigny challenged his team after the game to do some soul searching.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want them to come back with some answers,\u201d he said in his postgame interview. \u201cI know what I think. I want to know what they think. … They have to understand and own it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guenther\u2019s answer was to not dwell on the mistakes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think you learn from stuff like this, but as much as you want to just break down everything, I don\u2019t think you can beat yourself up too long. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s 15 games left, so make sure we learn from it, but it doesn\u2019t bleed into our other games.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cole boiled it down to a few words.<\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately, we just have to do it,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s no better way to say it.\u201d<\/p>\n
