{"id":506644,"date":"2026-03-16T20:02:31","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T20:02:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/506644\/"},"modified":"2026-03-16T20:02:31","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T20:02:31","slug":"calgary-edmonton-prague-named-hosts-of-2028-world-cup-of-hockey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/506644\/","title":{"rendered":"Calgary, Edmonton, Prague named hosts of 2028 World Cup of Hockey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The National Hockey League announced on Monday that Calgary, Edmonton, and Prague, Czech Republic will co-host the 2028 World Cup of Hockey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The NHL and NHLPA plan for an expanded eight-nation tournament that will be held in February of 2028.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThere is no international competition in sports that matches the passion, skill, and excitement of hockey\u2019s best-on-best coming together to represent their countries &#8212; last year\u2019s 4 Nations Face-Off and the recent Winter Olympics were just the latest examples,\u201d NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a release. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe at the National Hockey League and our partners at the National Hockey League Players\u2019 Association can\u2019t wait to bring the World Cup of Hockey 2028 to three spectacular venues in three cities that shine when staging big events. We know Calgary, Edmonton, and Prague will serve as fantastic hosts for hockey fans from all over the globe, and that the greatest hockey players in the world will compete on a level that will make this event truly memorable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cComing off the amazing international hockey played at the recent Olympic Winter Games, NHL players are very excited to return to international hockey at the World Cup of Hockey 2028,\u201d said Marty Walsh, NHLPA Executive Director. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cCalgary, Edmonton and Prague are cities with very deep roots in hockey, and the games will be played in three hockey venues that will be amongst the best in the world. The players cannot wait to don their home country\u2019s sweaters in Alberta and Prague in February 2028.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Prague will host half of the field of the round-robin portion of the tournament at the O2 Arena.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Calgary will host the other half of the round-robin field at the newly built Scotia Place, which is currently under construction and set to be the home of the NHL\u2019s Flames, AHL\u2019s Wranglers, and WHL\u2019s Hitmen starting in the 2027-28 season. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Each round-robin city will host seven games &#8211; six round-robin and one elimination game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Edmonton will host both semifinal games and the final at Rogers Place. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The tournament will feature a total of 17 games and is part of the regular schedule of international competitions involving NHL players that began with the 4 Nations Face-Off, Milano Cortina 2026, and will continue with the 2028 World Cup of Hockey and the 2030 Winter Olympics in the French Alps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">TSN Hockey insider Pierre LeBrun reveals that the tournament will follow NHL rules, meaning overtime in the championship game will not be 3-on-3 as it was at Milano Cortina 2026. <\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NHL rules used in World Cup of Hockey: so it will NOT be 3 on 3 OT in championship game.
