When he came into the NHL for the 2016-17 season, he finished the season as the team’s second-highest point producer, only to Jeff Skinner. That’s cool, right? What if I told you that it is one of only two seasons in which the Finnish star hasn’t led the Hurricanes in points, joining 2022-23, when Martin Necas did? Aho’s consistency as the spearhead of the Carolina offence is staggering.

In his rookie season, Aho had 49 points. That’s the only time he’s been under 50 for a season. If you exclude the 2020-21 season, which was just 56 games due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Aho has not had fewer than 65 points since his rookie campaign. He has three 60-point campaigns including his rookie season and the pandemic-shortened season. Every other season, he’s hit at least 70 points. On the overtime winner against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Aho hit career-point 700. That brought him into rare company in the history of the Hurricanes.

Aho’s Staggering Statistics

Since relocation, only two Hurricanes have passed 500 points: Eric Staal and Aho. Jordan Staal sits third with 492 points, a staggering distance between the current Canes captain and the Finnish phenom. Eric had 775 points in his NHL career when he was traded to the New York Rangers, meaning he’s still 75 points ahead of Aho. However, that record will fall shortly. There are still 14 games left this season, Aho’s under contract for the foreseeable future, and he’s just 28 years old. Let’s say Aho only plays 10 games before he gets rested for the postseason. He can still take a significant chunk out of that gap to Eric’s team-leading tally.

Sebastian Aho, Carolina Hurricanes (Jess Starr/The Hockey Writers)

If you want to include relocation, the flow of time gets an extra ripple. Ron Francis’s success in Hartford with the Whalers brings him to 1175 points, the only player in the organization’s history to reach four digits. He’s the leader in points for the Whalers/Hurricanes franchise. Aho’s chase of Francis is going to take a little longer, but he’s on pace to break that record before the end of his current contract. There’s a chance Aho retires as the best point producer in the history of this franchise.

Aho already is the franchise leader in short-handed goals and game-winning goals. He leads them in all-time overtime winners too as he’s been the difference to win a game 68 times. He’s been in the league for nine seasons, so six or seven times a season, Sebastian Aho is the guy who seals a game. He’s a difference-maker in the Hurricanes forward core, and he’s one of the very few the team has.

Aho’s Playoff Consistency

In 89 playoff games, Aho has a franchise-leading 34 goals and 51 assists for 85 points. He ticks along, even when the games get tougher. He’s already the Hurricanes franchise leader in basically playoff related. The guy in second is Andrei Svechnikov with 48 points, 37 back. Aho is the focal point for the Hurricanes in the playoffs, and he’s the one who is most heavily relied on to get the Hurricanes to the next step and where they need to be.

Related: Hurricanes Could Have Long-Term Scoring Fix in Bradly Nadeau

Those deep playoff runs into the third round? All of them have come on the back of Aho. There has been only one season in which Aho did not lead the Hurricanes in playoff points, and that was last season, when he was second by a single point. The Hurricanes go where Aho takes them.

Can Aho Do it Again?

This season, Aho has 69 points with 24 goals and 45 assists in 68 games. He’s likely to hit the point-per-game mark for the fifth time in his career. He’s been within five points of a point-per-game pace twice more. He is money in the bank for 75-85 points almost every season. He’s had one season since becoming a center in which he was below that in a full 82-game season in 2022-23, and he still hit 67 points. He averages 77.04 points a season at the time of writing. He’s so unbelievably consistent it borders on robotic.

Ahead of the 2026 playoffs, the Hurricanes will be looking to get over the hump and into the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in 20 years. If Carolina is going to expel those third-round demons, they will need their Finnish star to find another level. Aho has the talent to break games open and to win series on his own, a feature Carolina lacks around him. The front office has tried to change this for many years now, but there is yet to be a permanent solution. It means yet again the burden will fall on Aho’s shoulders.

Despite all his statistical success, the one thing looming over his Hurricanes tenure is the lack of a Stanley Cup. One thing Eric Staal has that Aho doesn’t is that elusive ring. If Carolina is going to capture Lord Stanley’s Mug for the second time, it has to be with Aho as the main focal point. He has to be the force to shatter Carolina’s ceiling and get them to the promised land of a championship.

<a href="https://thehockeywriters.substack.com/s/carolina-hurricanes"
