NEW YORK \u2014 After his comments to ESPN on Tuesday<\/a>, saying he wanted his Olympic golden goal puck back from the Hockey Hall of Fame, made headlines, Jack Hughes said he\u2019s \u201chonored that the puck is there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like the most special place in hockey,\u201d he said after a three-point night Wednesday against the Rangers. \u201cI\u2019m honored that it\u2019s there, but obviously I think things were taken crazy. That\u2019s the way I felt. I didn\u2019t know where the puck was. It is what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

On a Feb. 26 interview on TNT, Hughes said he wasn\u2019t aware of the puck\u2019s whereabouts. Then, in Tuesday\u2019s ESPN story, he said, \u201cI\u2019m trying to get it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLike, that\u2019s bulls\u2014 that the Hockey Hall of Fame has it, in my opinion,\u201d he told ESPN<\/a>. \u201cWhy would they have that puck?\u201d<\/p>\n

National outlets ran articles about his quote, and ESPN personality Pat McAfee posted on X<\/a>, \u201cLet\u2019s get Jack Hughes his puck back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Philip Pritchard, the Hall of Fame\u2019s curator, responded and made it clear that it would not be giving Hughes the puck.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, in the easiest words, it was never Jack\u2019s puck to own,\u201d Pritchard told ESPN on Wednesday<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s been donated to us now. For every artifact that\u2019s been donated, we have a paper trail and signed paperwork of where it\u2019s come from.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Devils spokesperson said Hughes wasn\u2019t previously aware of the International Ice Hockey Federation\u2019s process regarding pucks from international competitions. The IIHF donated the puck to the Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n

Asked if he has any plans to reach out to the Hall of Fame about the puck, Hughes said no.<\/p>\n
