{"id":520603,"date":"2026-03-24T18:57:30","date_gmt":"2026-03-24T18:57:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/520603\/"},"modified":"2026-03-24T18:57:30","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T18:57:30","slug":"penguins-gm-kyle-dubas-has-no-plans-to-trade-erik-karlsson-this-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/520603\/","title":{"rendered":"Penguins GM Kyle Dubas has no plans to trade Erik Karlsson this summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It appears <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/erik-karlsson\/8474578\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/erik-karlsson\/8474578\" target=\"_blank\">Erik Karlsson<\/a>\u2019s future is with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/pittsburgh-penguins\/5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/pittsburgh-penguins\/5\" target=\"_blank\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reports Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas has no intention of moving the veteran defenceman this off-season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">While Karlsson remains signed through next year at a cap hit of $10 million, he is owed a $6 million signing bonus on July 1 of this year and just $1.5 million in remaining salary beyond that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The 35-year-old blueliner has 11 goals and 54 points in 65 games this season, on pace for his best output since joining Pittsburgh from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/san-jose-sharks\/28\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/san-jose-sharks\/28\" target=\"_blank\">San Jose Sharks<\/a> as part of a three-team trade in 2023. The Sharks retained $1.5 million in the deal to bring Karlsson\u2019s cap hit down to the current $10 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cLook at the way he\u2019s playing. I mean, it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/erik-karlsson\/8474578\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/erik-karlsson\/8474578\" target=\"_blank\">Erik Karlsson<\/a> of old. There will be serious interest in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/erik-karlsson\/8474578\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/erik-karlsson\/8474578\" target=\"_blank\">Erik Karlsson<\/a> this summer,\u201d LeBrun explained on Early Trading. \u201cHaving said that, I will tell you that I chatted with Penguins GM Kyle Dubas, who is not happy to have Karlsson\u2019s name out there in terms of trade chatter. He is adamant that Karlsson has been such a great player for them this year, that he views Karlsson as a guy that they will continue to want to retool and put young players around, that he doesn\u2019t see himself wanting to trade him this summer. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHe wanted to be clear about that with me and to spread the word, I guess, that he doesn\u2019t view <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/erik-karlsson\/8474578\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/erik-karlsson\/8474578\" target=\"_blank\">Erik Karlsson<\/a> as a trade chip this summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Averaging 23:45 of ice time this season, Karlsson was part of Team Sweden at the Olympics last month, posting four assists in five games. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Karlsson was the subject of trade speculation last summer after a $5 million bonus was paid out on July 1, but said when training camp opened he was not surprised he stayed put. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cNo, I\u2019m not,\u201d Karlsson said, per Wes Crosby of NHL.com. \u201cIt was a quiet summer for me. Didn\u2019t really hear much other than what I read from you guys and all the other people around the league, which is typical for the off-season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Karlsson had 11 goals and 53 points in 82 games with the Penguins last season while averaging 23:14 of ice time. The 6-foot, right-shot defenceman is in the seventh season of an eight-year, $92 million contract inked with the Sharks in 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Selected 15th overall by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/ottawa-senators\/9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/ottawa-senators\/9\" target=\"_blank\">Ottawa Senators<\/a> in the 2008 draft, Karlsson has 211 goals and 924 points in 1,149 career games. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">With an aging core that includes Karlsson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/sidney-crosby\/8471675\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/sidney-crosby\/8471675\" target=\"_blank\">Sidney Crosby<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/evgeni-malkin\/8471215\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/evgeni-malkin\/8471215\" target=\"_blank\">Evgeni Malkin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/kris-letang\/8471724\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/kris-letang\/8471724\" target=\"_blank\">Kris Letang<\/a>, the Penguins are pushing to make the playoffs this season for the first time since 2022. The team sits second in the Metropolitan Division, but hold just a one-point cushion on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/new-york-islanders\/2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/new-york-islanders\/2\" target=\"_blank\">New York Islanders<\/a>, who are currently in the final wild-card spot. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">While Karlsson\u2019s future appears to be coming more clear, the future of Malkin in Pittsburgh remains unclear as the 39-year-old forward approaches unrestricted free agency this summer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It appears Erik Karlsson\u2019s future is with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
