Trevor Zegras is the kind of player the Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> should want to keep around for the long haul.<\/p>\n

His next contract won’t be cheap, though.<\/p>\n

Daily Faceoff’s NHL insider, Anthony Di Marco<\/a>, broke down what’s coming next in a new article on Tuesday. The summation of his estimates works out to be about an eight-year deal worth $8 million per year, or $64 million total. That’s spread out in a variety of possibilities that Di Marco lays out.<\/p>\n

“As a UFA, Zegras would likely get an AAV that falls somewhere in the neighborhood of $9 million to $9.5 million,” Di Marco begins. “If, for instance, Zegras were to sign an eight-year contract with the Flyers, they would have to negotiate a general AAV of balancing six years at his UFA number and two years at his RFA number.\u00a0Math has never been my friend, but an AAV somewhere in the $7.5 million to $8.5 million range would likely be the right landing spot for Zegras on a long term contract. Of course, Zegras\u2019 camp could elect to go with short-term deals (he does have arbitration rights) until he can maximize his UFA years on a longer-term deal.”<\/p>\n

So maybe it’s a little higher or a little lower, but it seems safe to think Zegras can top $50 million in total value, if he signs the max eight-year length.<\/p>\n

He could go with a shorter deal, though, which changes the finances.<\/p>\n

“If that were the case, Zegras could maybe cash in \u2013 all assuming he maintains his current level of production \u2013 on an AAV closer to $10 million in two years time, especially with the salary cap\u2019s projection, which is expected to hit $113.5 million by 2027-28,” Di Marco writes. “It would also give Zegras more time to potentially establish himself as a center, which would inherently increase his overall value.”<\/p>\n

This season, Zegras has played in 69 games and has 22 goals with 33 assists for 55 points. He’s also a wizard in penalty shootouts, for whatever slight added value that brings.<\/p>\n

He just turned 25 years old last week, so his future is certainly a bright one. The Flyers could pay him to keep him around for a long time.<\/p>\n
