I\u2019m just so excited to be here. Coming from a family with deep roots in the hockey community, Fortescue \u2014 a Don Bosco Prep alumnus \u2014 recognizes how rare this is.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Drew Fotescue during rookies training camp in 2025. Robert Sabo for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m pretty lucky for sure,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m not sure how many people ever get that chance. Coming home and seeing them and giving them a hug as soon as all the news broke is something that I\u2019ll always remember. Having them always there in my back corner to support me in anything I need is something that\u2019s really special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fortescue said the plan was always for him to turn pro after his junior season at BC. There were conversations between both parties last season, but they ultimately decided to hold off until the following year.<\/p>\n<p>Feeling ready for a new opportunity, Fortescue felt the timing was right.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Drew Fortescue after being drafted in 2023. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>He met the rest of the team after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aol.com\/news\/goalie-dylan-garand-impresses-nhl-191630806.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:3-2 shootout loss to the Jets;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">3-2 shootout loss to the Jets<\/a> on Sunday, which included a brief exchange with Perreault. Fortescue said having Perreault around, after just going through a similar situation, helps make it easier on him.<\/p>\n<p>Improving his strength is an area that Fortescue has been working on for some time. He believes he still has \u201ca long way to go,\u201d but Fortescue aspires to bring his ability to shutdown top opponents \u2014 a strength of his at BC \u2014 to the NHL.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing around these guys, I think, it\u2019s going to push me and make me see what I need to work on,\u201d said Fortescue, who modeled his game after former Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh. \u201cI think that\u2019s something that I\u2019m excited [about], and having that opportunity to come here is going to be able to show me that as quick as possible. I\u2019m going to try and learn the best I can from all these guys and take what I\u2019ve learned in this short time and use it in the summer to try and get ready for next year as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sullivan said he \u201cwould be surprised\u201d if Matt Rempeplays again this season.<\/p>\n<p>Rempe <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/20\/sports\/rangers-matt-rempe-heading-to-ir-for-another-thumb-procedure\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:missed his 14th straight game Monday;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">missed his 14th straight game Monday<\/a> as he recovers from a second procedure on his thumb, which he broke in a fight with the Sharks\u2019 Ryan Reaveson Oct 23.
