Aerin Frankel is a first-time Olympic gold medalist, a Westchester County native, and is now a part of the U.S. Olympic women’s hockey team history.<\/p>\n
\tThe team shocked the world on Feb. 19 with a nail-biting, overtime win against longtime rival, Team Canada.<\/p>\n
\tFrankel, who has roots in both Chappaqua and Briarcliff Manor, and her 23 teammates, cemented their spots in history by becoming the third Olympic women’s hockey team to win a gold medal.<\/p>\n
\t“…So many emotions, so much excitement, getting to share that with friends and family, but it was kind of a moment of pride for us that we had represented our country and done so at the world’s biggest stage,” said Frankel.<\/p>\n
\tHer father, Peter, uncle Josh, and around 20 friends and family were there the moment history was made.<\/p>\n
\tBack home at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, her 97-year-old grandmother, Lydia, joined along in spirit.<\/p>\n
\t“I’m hoping to be able to get home soon to bring the gold medal for her to hold. It would mean so much to me,” said Frankel.<\/p>\n
\tFrankel is in her third season as a goalie with the Professional Women’s Hockey League’s Boston Fleet.<\/p>\n
\tWhile she calls Boston home now, she says she’s honored to represent Westchester in the big leagues.<\/p>\n
\t“Knowing that I had a lot of support meant a lot to me, and hearing from some of my teachers from the Chappaqua Central School District was incredible, and I thank them for all their support while I was in Milan,” she says.<\/p>\n
\tFrankel says for now, she is just excited to continue playing hockey with the Boston Fleet.<\/p>\n
