We\u2019re not quite at the point of discussing potential landing spots for Connor McDavid, but the noisier and worse things get<\/a> in Edmonton, the closer we get to it\u2014and those talks begin to reemerge.<\/p>\n

Last offseason was full of them until McDavid put pen to paper to extend with the Oilers, and one team that came up more than once was the New York Rangers. It\u2019s been quiet ever since, in large part due to their disastrous 2025-26 season. However, former Ranger Sean Avery appears to still be quite confident that the best player in the world will be headed to the Big Apple in two years\u2019 time.<\/p>\n

Avery said<\/a> during an appearance on The Adam Friedland Show:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the McDavid kid, he\u2019s McJesus. He\u2019s so good. No, but he\u2019s going to have to be, because he\u2019s going to sign with the Rangers in two years. Yep,\u201d<\/p>\n

Greg Wyshynski of ESPN<\/a> found it rather noteworthy to hear such comments from a former Ranger still in tune with the organization.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to point out something\u2014so Sean Avery was on The Adam Friedland Show. Sean Avery, in that interview, said with some level of confidence and authority that I didn\u2019t anticipate hearing, that Connor McDavid would be a Ranger when his contract is up. Now, I think there has been speculation to that end, but I just found it to be interesting that Avery was so emphatic about it. I was sort of startled by how matter-of-fact it was, by a guy who still has some tentacles into the MSG universe,\u201d<\/p>\n

The 29-year-old McDavid starts his two-year, $25 million extension with the Oilers next year (2026-27) and will be eligible to hit free agency following the 2027-28 season.<\/p>\n

As Wyshynski noted, New York has always made sense as a landing spot for not just McDavid, but any superstar or star player that becomes available.<\/p>\n

The problem now is the direction of the Rangers, who have begun a retool with no clear end in sight. If they time it right and get back into contention by 2028\u2014enough for McDavid to feel he can step in and lead them to a Stanley Cup\u2014they\u2019ll absolutely be a front-runner in any sweepstakes<\/p>\n

However, if things get even uglier and they end up stripping it down to the studs, then there will be almost no chance of landing McDavid, who will only leave Edmonton for a better chance at winning a championship<\/a> elsewhere.<\/p>\n
