The hockey world knows the clock is ticking on the Edmonton Oilers to win with Connor McDavid\u2014his short-term contract and all the reports surrounding it<\/a> have made that clear.<\/p>\n

As a result, whenever the Oilers struggle, things get amplified, and that\u2019s especially the case when McDavid himself voices frustration like he did over the weekend<\/a>. Those comments increased the tension in Edmonton and have led some to wonder whether he might reevaluate his future with the team as early as this summer.<\/p>\n

That very well could happen if their 2025-26 season ends poorly. However, in his latest rumor mill piece for Spector\u2019s Hockey, Lyle Richardson shared that he still believes it to be unlikely.<\/p>\n

Richardson wrote<\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMcDavid could request a trade this summer, but that seems unlikely. Despite his current frustration, he will probably remain patient and see what the club does this summer and how they perform next season. If they haven\u2019t improved or they\u2019ve gotten worse by then, McDavid could decide that he needs to leave Edmonton if he hopes to win that elusive Stanley Cup championship while he\u2019s still in his prime,\u201d<\/p>\n

The 29-year-old McDavid is in the final year of his current eight-year, $100 million contract with the Oilers, and will begin his two-year, $25 million extension signed with the team next season (2026-27).\u00a0<\/p>\n

Amid all the noise<\/a> surrounding McDavid, it\u2019s always been clear that his preference is to stay and win in Edmonton. The runway to achieve that goal has, of course, gotten smaller, which is why rumors of his potential departure have grown louder in recent years as they\u2019ve yet to get the job done.<\/p>\n

For now, nothing can happen until this season ends anyway, so until then, things will remain fluid depending on how the Oilers perform. Their latest result\u2014a 5-2 win in Utah\u2014was perhaps their best of the campaign, and they\u2019ll look to carry that momentum and positivity into a critical Pacific Division clash on Thursday night in Vegas<\/p>\n
