{"id":527964,"date":"2026-03-28T18:48:15","date_gmt":"2026-03-28T18:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/527964\/"},"modified":"2026-03-28T18:48:15","modified_gmt":"2026-03-28T18:48:15","slug":"penguins-recall-mcgroarty-awaiting-word-on-crosby-injury","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nhl\/527964\/","title":{"rendered":"Penguins Recall McGroarty; Awaiting Word on Crosby Injury"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/pittsburghhockeynow.com\/tag\/pittsburgh-penguins\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"147\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> made a recall Saturday afternoon, and the implications could be telling. <\/p>\n<p>The team recalled rookie winger <a href=\"https:\/\/pittsburghhockeynow.com\/tag\/rutger-mcgroarty\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"4284\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rutger McGroarty<\/a>, 21, from the Wilkes-Barre\/Scranton Penguins. In 20 NHL games this season, McGroarty has five points, including two goals. <\/p>\n<p>McGroarty turns 22 Sunday. <\/p>\n<p>The recall might be telling regarding injuries to Penguins captain Sidney Crosby or forward <a href=\"https:\/\/pittsburghhockeynow.com\/tag\/evgeni-malkin\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"60\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Evgeni Malkin<\/a>. Crosby left the Penguins\u2019 game against the Ottawa Senators Thursday with a lower body injury. Malkin has missed the last two games with an upper-body injury. <\/p>\n<p>Despite struggles, rookie <a href=\"https:\/\/pittsburghhockeynow.com\/tag\/ville-koivunen\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"4073\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ville Koivunen<\/a> has also retained a spot in the lineup. The WBS Penguins have already clinched a playoff spot in the AHL\u2019s Atlantic Division.  <\/p>\n<p>The team also returned forwards Avery Hayes and Joona Koppanen to the WBS Penguins. The pair were recalled on Thursday, but forward Anthony Mantha was able to play despite missing practice on Wednesday. Neither Hayes nor Koppanen played against Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p>When he speaks to the media at 3 p.m., coach Dan Muse will update the injury status of Crosby and Malkin.
