Despite the team potentially getting set for a retool, in many ways, swinging big on the NHL’s latest contract-year phenom feels like the most Maple Leaf-like thing to do.

Likely to be one of the summer’s big free agent gets, there are reasons to see Raddysh as appealing, particularly given his breakout season and the need in Toronto to make improvements on their blue line. At the same time, this is a target that, if the wrong contract is handed out, could cost a GM his job.

Of Course Toronto Will Chase Raddysh

Raddysh, a Caledon, Ontario native, is coming off his best season at age 30. And, it’s not just a season where he upped his production a little. He’s exploded, and through 64 games, the right-shot defenceman has piled up 20 goals and 65 points.

He was one of the saviors in Tampa this season when they hit a few hurdles, and he showcased the kind of puck-moving ability and heavy shot on the power play that can be a difference-maker. It’s the type of late-career surge that turns heads across the league.

Darren Raddysh, Tampa Bay Lightning (Jess Starr/The Hockey Writers)

As he hits the market at the perfect time — big money available and not a lot of big names to spend it on — early projections suggest he could command a deal in the range of six years at $6–7 million annually. It’s a risk, given his previous career high sat at just 37 points.

He’s an enticing option for several teams, but this is the kind of player Toronto may chase as they look to redefine their identity a bit this offseason.

Buyer Beware

From a Toronto perspective, Raddysh screams big swing. And, the organization will look to take one.

It’s unclear whether management will be sent packing, players shipped out, or a new coach brought in. However, a good bet is that something gives with the Maple Leafs. That being said, the odds are strong that the team, especially if they don’t make big management changes, will take a home run cut on a late bloomer in a thin free-agent market.

It’s a move that could go sideways.

Examining the Leafs’ history of handing out long-term UFA deals that don’t age well, and it’s easy to understand why some fans might be bracing for another “here we go again” moment.

Related: Maple Leafs Can’t Let History Repeat with First-Round Pick

It’s important to note that the Leafs have a clear and pressing need on the right side of their blue line. In that context, Raddysh fits the bill almost perfectly. And, given the roster changes that may occur, there could be money to spend. If Brandon Carlo goes out, or one of Auston Matthews or William Nylander is moved, a big name coming in might be a priority.

Changes feel inevitable, and to help fans wrap their heads around the reality that players might be leaving, bringing in a new name with high upside might be seen as a win. So too, general manager Brad Treliving is entering a pivotal stretch, with pressure mounting to make meaningful improvements and keep his job. He might be willing to gamble if he believes he’s on the hot seat already. If he pushes all in on a high-upside player—especially one with local ties—and it works, he keeps his job. If he overpays (maybe as much as $8 million), he goes down swinging.

If Raddysh can settle in as a 50–55 point defenceman into his early 30s, a deal in that price range is fine considering the salary cap spike. If his breakout proves to be more of a one-off, however, the Leafs could find themselves tied to another long, expensive contract that limits flexibility down the road.

There’s no denying the risk here. The question is whether this is a player the Leafs will roll the dice on.

<a href="https://thehockeywriters.substack.com/s/toronto-maple-leafs" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer
