He punctuated his performance in the third period when he made a spectacular rush up the ice with the Flyers on the power play.

That padded the Flyers’ advantage to 4-0. But Detroit made a furious push to cut the Flyers’ lead to one with 3:46 minutes remaining. The sudden spurt came in a span of about two and a half minutes.

Sean Couturier, though, buried an empty-netter from long distance to seal the Flyers’ win. Tippett assisted the goal to finish with four points.

Noah Cates scored the team’s other marker with his career-high 17th. The Flyers improved to 25-5-2 when he records a point.

Rick Tocchet’s club has gone 11-3-1 over its last 15 games, a stretch in which it has allowed only 2.27 goals per game.

The Flyers (36-24-12) have scored 10 goals over their last two games. They rolled the Blackhawks, 5-1, Thursday night in Philadelphia.

This was the Flyers’ first of three matchups with the Red Wings (39-26-8), a team they’re trying to jump in the Eastern Conference wild-card race. The win put the Flyers just two points back of Detroit.

• This was a critical one for the Flyers, who had some results go their way on the out-of-town scoreboard.

The Blue Jackets lost in regulation, so the Flyers climbed to within three points of the second wild-card spot. They also moved to within four points of the Penguins, who hold third place in the Metropolitan Division.

The Flyers have 10 games to go. They are undoubtedly making it interesting.

• Tippett continued to look like the best player on the ice. His confidence might be at an all-time high.

He has a real chance to end up with 30 or more goals for the first time in his career.

“He’s special as a player and person,” Cates said Monday. “Premier power forward in the league, a scorer. When he’s physical and into it and winning every race, every battle, not much can really stop him. … He’s a catalyst for our team.”

Owen Tippett notched his second hat trick of the season when he beat John Gibson bar down in the third period against the Red Wings.

• Despite things turning dicey in the final six and a half minutes, Dan Vladar did his job with 30 saves on 33 shots.

The 28-year-old is up to 24 wins. His career high coming into the season was 14.

Mason Appleton, Alex DeBrincat and Lucas Raymond produced the Red Wings’ onslaught late in the third period. Raymond’s goal came with Detroit having its net emptied for the extra attacker.

Vladar still converted 14 saves in the third period.

Red Wings netminder John Gibson, who was starting for a second straight night, stopped 17 of the Flyers’ 21 shots. The 32-year-old was pulled after Tippett completed his hat trick.

• Porter Martone watch officially started Saturday night after Michigan State was upset by Wisconsin in the regional final of the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans relinquished a late two-goal lead and lost in overtime, 4-3.

Martone, who the Flyers selected at sixth overall last summer, finished his freshman season with 50 points (25 goals, 25 assists) in 35 games.

The 19-year-old winger could be joining the Flyers at some point for the rest of this season. It feels likely that he’ll be signing his entry-level contract to end his college career and begin his pro career.

• The Flyers are right back at it Sunday when they host the 44-18-11 Stars (7 p.m. ET/NBCSP).

Tocchet’s club is 5-5-1 in the second game of back-to-back sets.
