The NHL’s Utah Mammoth is facing another trademark debacle less than a week before the 2025-2026 season begins.<\/p>\n

Mammoth Hockey, LLC, based in Oregon, which sells hockey bags and merchandise, wants the Salt Lake City franchise to cease selling merchandise until a federal court makes its determination. It all began with a lawsuit filed by the hockey team in August, followed by a preliminary injunction filed by Mammoth Hockey,\u00a0LLC last week.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a report from the Deseret News<\/a> in Salt Lake City, the Utah Mammoth filed a federal lawsuit against Mammoth Hockey LLC, \u201cseeking declaratory judgment that the \u2018Utah Mammoth\u2019 name does not violate any rights asserted by Mammoth Hockey.\u201d Mammoth Hockey LLC has since fired back with its preliminary injunction request, \u201cessentially an order to pause operations until the court rules.\u201d<\/p>\n

But in order for that to happen, Mammoth Hockey, LLC has to prove that the Utah Mammoth has caused \u2014 and that the company is subject to \u2014 irreparable harm.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Mammoth Hockey argues that the Utah Mammoth knew of its long-standing use of the mark but never sought an agreement, unlike with other brands whose names were considered, including Yeti, when similar conflicts arose,” Mammoth Hockey,\u00a0LLC said in a statement to ESPN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mammoth Hockey, LLC is referring to a separate trademark conflict the hockey team had as last season came to a close.<\/p>\n

The team had relocated from Arizona, where it was the Arizona Coyotes. For its inaugural season last year, the team played as the Utah Hockey Club until a permanent name was chosen. Initially, Yeti was the top choice. But that was shut down because it conflicted with Yeti, the company known for its coolers, thermoses and other outdoor products.<\/p>\n
