This is a full reset conversation after a season that slipped away early and never recovered.

Vancouver closed with 50 points and a -88 goal differential. That’s not a slump. That’s structural.

Pettersson is the biggest call on the table. He put up 45 points in 64 games, but the impact never matched the cap hit or expectations.

His -23 rating tells part of the story. The other part is how often the Canucks struggled to control play when their top center was on the ice.

Moving him would hurt in the short term. But it could open the door to multiple high picks and elite prospects, exactly what this roster lacks.

That’s the kind of move that defines a front office.

A summer that will define the Canucks

The second file is Evander Kane. He scored 12 goals and 30 points in 69 games, but the fit never fully clicked.

Kane brings edge, no doubt. But this roster isn’t one piece away from contention. Letting him walk as a UFA clears space and shifts the focus to youth.

Keeping him would mean doubling down on a group that already fell out of the race early.

That’s not where this team is headed.

Then there’s the leadership question. Right now, it feels like a room without a clear voice.

Brock Boeser should be that voice. He led the team with 17 goals and played through tough minutes all season.

His -37 rating reflects the chaos around him more than his individual play.

Naming Boeser captain sends a message. Accountability, consistency, and presence.

And it gives Foote a clear extension of his voice on the bench and in the room.

Three decisions. One direction.

Trade a core piece, move on from a veteran, and finally put a captain in place.

If the Canucks get this right, the rebuild accelerates. If not, it’s more of the same.

Previously on Vancouver Hockey Daily

POLL

58 MINUTES AGO|12 ANSWERS

Trade Pettersson, name a captain: inside the high-stakes summer facing the Canucks

Should the Canucks trade Elias Pettersson this summer ?

Photo credit: Bob Frid-Imagn Images Elias Pettersson and head coach Adam Foote are at the…

[5128
3528,305,894,2318,690,5,4,6308,893,27,5313
0":"post-530471","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-vancouver-canucks","8":"tag-adam-foote","9":"tag-brock-boeser","10":"tag-canucks","11":"tag-elias-pettersson","12":"tag-evander-kane","13":"tag-hockey","14":"tag-nhl","15":"tag-patrik-allvin","16":"tag-vancouver","17":"tag-vancouver-canucks","18":"tag-vancouvercanucks
["GET
