Washington’s stars showed up for them all night.

Tom Wilson, Alex Ovechkin, Jakob Chyrchrun, and Ryan Leondard scored for the Capitals. Travis Sanheim, Carl Grundstrom, Christian Dvorak, and Denver Barkey scored for the Flyers.

The Flyers got off to a fast and strong start to each period, but the Capitals blanked them in the first period, and set Philly behind. Despite consistent strong starts in each period, the Flyers were chasing for nearly all of the game. They cut it to a one-goal deficit late in the third period, but could never tie it. The Capitals scored on the empty net, sealing the win.

Here is how we got to the final score.

Read More: Flyers Game 74: Lines, Notes, & How to Watch @ Capitals

Capitals grab early lead as tempers rise

The Flyers came out of the game looking like a team desperate to carry some positive momentum. They were coming out with pace and intensity, and were getting pucks on Logan Thompson early.

But, it did not take long for Porter Martone, in his first NHL game, to earn the first penalty of his NHL career, a delay of game call for a puck over the glass just 3:29 into the game. Luckily for Martone, the Flyers were able to get the kill.

Martone then got to make his power play debut after Cole Hutson got called for tripping. The Flyers had a couple of good looks. Their best chance was blocked by Rasmus Sandin after Travis Konecny let a one-timer rip on what was an empty goal. The Flyers’ chance was killed by Washington.

Later, a Trevor Zegras rush was cut short by Hendrix Lapierre. Lapierre fed Sandin (23), who found Pierre-Luc Dubois (6), who dropped it for Tom Wilson in the high slot, and Wilson (26) buried it past Vladar. With just a tick over 5 minutes to play in the first, the Capitals had the 1-0 lead.

Washington wasn’t done. Connor McMichael (28) made a slick pass while pinned along the board to Matt Roy (16). Roy sent a cross-crease pass, which was stopped by Cam York, but York was overpowered by Alex Ovechkin (30), who put the Capitals up 2-0.

The period ended with some high tempers, with Sanheim, Konecny, and Zegras getting involved with DuBios, Wilson, and McMichael. Zegras and McMichael got two minutes each for slashing before play went into the first intermission.

Read More: PhHN Daily: Martone’s Debut; Flyers Playoff Push; Maple Leafs’ Mess

Flyers get on the board, Capitals keep the 2-goal lead

The second period opened at 4-on-4 due to the matching slashing penalties. Philly got off to the same sort of high-intensity start.

Travis Sanheim (9) sent a blast from the slot that got past Thompson with assists from Konecny (38) and Christian Dvorak (30). The goal was originally waived off for goalie interference, but after a review, it was determined that a Washington stick hit Thompson, not Dvorak, making it a good goal for the Flyers and a 2-1 game.

After the goal, the Flyers finished 4-on-4, trying to get a breakaway to even the score early in the second. They could not convert and still trailed by one. That did not mean they would not do it eventually.

On the forecheck, Trevor Zegras (37) grabbed the loose puck and made a no-look cross-crease pass to Carl Grundstrom (9), who drove to the front of the net to tie the game at 2.

The Capitals got a chance a few minutes later after Konecny was called for tripping. That helped the Capitals retake the lead. Off the draw won by DuBois (7), Ryan Leonard (23) got the puck to Jakob Chychrun (24), who scored from the point, and gave the Caps the 3-2 lead.

Hutson got called for his second penalty of the game just about halfway through the period. This time, it was a hook drawn by Grundstrom trying to break away. That one went nowhere near as well, as the Capitals got the easy kill.

The Flyers were building some momentum in the offensive zone, but a Zegras tripping penalty halted anything. Washington did it again. Ryan Leonard (16), who set up the Chychrun goal, got one of his own, giving the Capitals the 4-2 lead.

That was the score headed into the second intermission.

Capitals seal the win

It took 43 seconds for the Flyers to get on the board. Travis Konecny’s shot was sent wide of the net, but that drew Thompson to the right side of the net. Konecny (39) fed Dvorak (16) for the easy score, cutting the score to 4-3. Travis Sanheim (24) got the secondary assist.

For the third period in a row, the Flyers came out with an energetic start.

Unfortunately for Philly, the Capitals kept scoring.

In a quick response to the Dvorak goal, Alex Ovechkin (31) does it again, making an incredible diving goal to give Washington the 5-3 lead. It does not happen without an incredible backhanded assist from Connor McMichael (29).

It certainly did not take the wind out of the Flyers’ sails. They kept pushing.

With plenty of bodies in front of the net, Ristolainen (10) sent a shot from the slot, and Denver Barkey (5) was there to redirect the puck home. That made it a 5-4 game. The Flyers trailed by a score with just under 12 to play in regulation. Noah Cates (25) matched his career high with the secondary assist on the score.

Sourdiff and Emil Andrae got tangled up, leading to matching roughing penalties and 4-on-4, though nothing came from that.

Philly was fighting. Time continued to tick off the clock, but the Flyers’ effort continued, but could not get anything to go.

Rasmus Ristolainen drew a trip from Dylan Strome, putting them on a big power play, trailing by a goal with 3:47 to play. Three-quarters of the way through, the Flyers pulled Vladar for the extra attacker. After a brief 6-on-4, the Flyers did not score.

The strategy did not pan out during 6-on-5. Tom Wilson (27) buried the empty-netter and sealed the 6-4 win for the Capitals.

What’s next for the Flyers

The Flyers return home on Thursday before another big swing game vs. the Detroit Red Wings at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m. EST.

Read More: What to Expect from Porter Martone as his NHL Career Begins

The Philadelphia Flyers (37-25-12) needed two points vs. the Washington Capitals (38-28-9) on Tuesday, but instead, left D.C.…

[5112
1468,58537,36308,54280,5,4,1467,56,5205,109
0":"post-533979","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-philadelphia-flyers","8":"tag-flyers","9":"tag-flyers-final-score","10":"tag-flyers-game","11":"tag-flyers-score","12":"tag-hockey","13":"tag-nhl","14":"tag-philadelphia","15":"tag-philadelphia-flyers","16":"tag-philadelphiaflyers","17":"tag-washington-capitals
["GET
