Exclusive: Scotia Place opening delayed, building needs to be moved three feet to the left<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve heard from players, fans and dignitaries alike, all telling us how excited they are for the building\u2019s eventual opening. In the works in various forms since 2013, and under active construction since July 2024, the arena will replace the beloved Scotiabank Saddledome as the home of the NHL\u2019s Calgary Flames, AHL\u2019s Calgary Wranglers, WHL\u2019s Calgary Hitmen, NLL\u2019s Calgary Roughnecks, and as the city\u2019s primary major concert venue. It\u2019s also slated to host the 2028 World Cup of Hockey<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, we can exclusively report that the opening of Scotia Place, expected to be taking place in September 2027, will be delayed for an undetermined period because the entire building needs to be moved three feet to the left.<\/p>\n

However, in all their preparations to ensure the rink was the correct size, the building was inadvertently shifted three feet to the right. As a result, the entire arena structure has to be disassembled, moved three feet to the left, and then reassembled again.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, City Hall sources explained the implications of having to move the entire arena structure three feet to the left:<\/p>\n

When Scotia Place opens, we want to ensure that everyone entering that venue has an unparalleled experience in the new facility. We need to be sure that the Saddledome is replaced by a building that\u2019s in the correct location. And we would be utter fools if we allowed it to be built inadvertently three feet to the right. Complete fools.<\/p>\n

Fools, indeed.<\/p>\n

The hope is that Scotia Place can somehow open, as originally scheduled, in time for the 2027-28 season. (When it does, if anything seems\u00a0slightly off relative to the originally published schematics, try not to get too hung up on it.)<\/p>\n
