Head coach Bruce Cassidy, who had won the Stanley Cup with them in 2023, was out<\/a>. For a team built to contend, the timing of the decision caught many off guard.<\/p>\n But inside the organization, the message was clear. They wanted a spark, and they turned to a coach known for providing exactly that: John Tortorella.<\/p>\n Tortorella\u2019s Track Record Meets a Talented Core in Vegas<\/p>\n Tortorella arrives in Vegas with one of the most decorated resumes for a coach in the sport.<\/p>\n A two-time Jack Adams Award winner (2003\u201304 and 2016\u201317), and a Stanley Cup champion with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004, he has built a reputation on accountability, structure, and intensity. Over 24 NHL seasons and more than 1,600 games behind the bench, he ranks among the most experienced coaches in league history<\/a>.<\/p>\n Now, he steps into a locker room loaded with talent and expectations. In his first press conference as head coach of the Golden Knight, Tortorella was asked about one player who could define this late-season push, Jack Eichel, and he gave an in-depth response on his relationship with Eichel and what stands out about his game:<\/p>\n “He’s a beauty. I got a chance with him in Four Nations and now the Olympics. You know what? I’ll tell you, up close and watching him at Four Nations every day for a couple weeks, the Olympics, he has turned into a player. I watched him in Buffalo and he was younger and all that, but some of the stuff that I thought he was doing, he’s changed. He’s a full 200 foot player. You’re going to look down that bench for him in every situation in the game,” said Tortarella. “It’s really weird now I’m coaching him, to get to watch him up close there, he’s impressive. And he’s got leadership qualities, too. He’s not afraid of the challenge. He’s not afraid to try to make a difference and is always looking over his shoulder wanting to get back on the ice. So I’m anxious to get to know him better. I really don’t know him that well, you know, I was not the head coach of those those tournaments. So, you get to know him at a different level. So I’m anxious to get to know him, and he’s going to have to put us on his back.
