(WWSB) – The Tampa Bay Lightning are back in the win column after Thursday’s 6-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Lightning took the first lead of the game in the first period after a goal by Anthony Cirelli. Pittsburgh responded by scoring two unanswered goals and head a 2-1 advantage at the end of the first period.

11 seconds into the second period Tampa Bay tied things up 2-2 on another goal by Cirelli. They would remain in control the rest of the way. The team known as the Bolts scored four more unanswered goals.

The sixth and final goal for Tampa Bay came from Cirelli. That was his third of the game which helped him record the third hat trick of his career. Lightning head coach, Jon Cooper, spoke after the game and he was pleased with what he saw on Thursday night from his team.

“It’s hard not to like tonight,” Cooper said. I didn’t love the last nine seconds of the game. It’s a funny game. We were kind of down after losing the Montreal game. We went back and watched it again and we actually didn’t play not too bad in that game.”

The Lightning are also partnering up with one of their sponsors, The Mosaic Company, to fight hunger in the Suncoast and Tampa Bay communities.

This partnership goes back 13 years in a program called “Goals for Food.” This season has already been record setting. The Mosaic’s donation for this year already surpasses $195,000. This is more than last season’s total.

Contributions are tied to every Lightning goal, hat trick, and now overtime game. The program donates $1,000 for every goal and $1,500 for every hat trick scored by a Lightning player on home ice.

A new addition this season is that the Goals for Food program also donates $5,000 for every Lightning game that goes to overtime, both at home and on the road.

The Mosaic’s Senior Manager of Public Affairs tells says it’s amazing to just reflect on how long both organizations have been teaming up to tackle this important issue.

“Time flies when you’re really making an impact,” Barron said. “The power of partnership has never been more strongly demonstrated than it is with this partnership right here. We’re super proud of it, and we’re so proud to partner with the Lightning.”

The Mosaic has 11 organizations that are “Goals for Food” recipients. One of them is Meals on Wheels Plus of Manatee, according to Barron.

She says they will use the funds to fight hunger in Myakka in partnership with the Myakka Family Food Pantry.

Copyright 2026 WWSB.
