Hughes fits what Kris Knoblauch’s Oilers need: a mature center with offense, detail, and a fast NHL runway.

The buzz around Hughes is real, not just college-hockey noise.

The Michigan captain is expected to draw interest from a double-digit number of NHL teams once his season ends, and Edmonton is one of the clubs believed to be in that mix.

That matters for the Oilers because this is not a long-range project.

Hughes is 24, shoots right, plays center, and is viewed as a player who can step into pro hockey quickly.

He also just forced the market to come to him. After passing on NHL offers last spring, Hughes went back to Michigan and turned that bet into leverage.

His production made sure of that.

Hughes put up 56 points in 39 games, a number that jumps off the page when it comes with real two-way responsibility.

Michigan head coach Brandon Naurato did not describe a one-dimensional scorer. He described a center with pro habits, stronger skating, and a game coaches can trust in any situation.

That’s where Edmonton enters the story.

Stan Bowman and Knoblauch do not need to chase a headline name here; they need to win a recruiting battle for a player who can help their middle six and special teams mix sooner than later.

Why the Oilers make sense

The Oilers’ team profile leaves room for that kind of swing.

Hughes checks boxes Edmonton should care about.

He had 21 goals and handled key defensive work, which is usually the combination that gets coaches to trust a newcomer away from the puck.

There is also contract value here.

Hughes is eligible for a one-year entry-level deal, and that gives contenders a cleaner short-term add than the usual development-heavy NCAA free-agent bet.

The competition will be stiff. Toronto and Montreal were also named among the teams believed to be in the mix, while a social post tied the race to multiple Canadian clubs once Michigan’s run ends next week.

For Edmonton, this should not be treated as background noise.

When a right-shot center with leadership, production, and a quick path to the NHL hits the market, the Oilers need to be aggressive.

Because if several teams want Hughes, standing back is not really an option. Edmonton looks like one of the clubs that should push hardest when the puck finally drops on his decision.

Previously on Edmonton Hockey Daily

POLL

5 HOURS AGO|56 ANSWERS

Oilers eye T.J.
